About this deal

We have a wide selection of power supply units (PSUs) for use in various domestic and industrial applications. The load / laptop / whatever does NOT pull – it lets the current through; faster if the resistance is low, slower if it’s high. Andrew’s comments are more about the internals of a device being run but the question was about the current rating of a charger.

USB wall chargers have to provide the same voltage (like the article said, it’s fixed), but some are capable of providing higher amperage for those devices that can use it.Depending on how different the supplied voltage is from what’s required, the device may simply fail, it may work “kind of”, or it may appear to work at the cost of a much shorter lifespan. To view the purposes they believe they have legitimate interest for, or to object to this data processing use the vendor list link below. A small hose under a lot of pressure will get you wet; a huge hose, even under low pressure, can wash you away.

In practical terms, that means the amperage rating of a power supply or charger must match or exceed that required by the device it is connected to. A power supply is used to reduce mains or three phase electricity, often at 240 Vac or 440 Vac down to a voltage that is usable, such as 12 Vdc. Thinking of purchasing a 12 V ac adapter, well look no further, here at RS we offer a range of high-quality power supplies to suit your every need. Plug a device expecting 110 volts into a 220-volt socket, and you’ll probably see sparks followed by darkness as the circuit breaker trips. Because a) the voltage matches, and b) the amperage provided is greater than that needed, you can use a 5v-2A charger with a 5V-1A device. The PSU also converts the current rating, in the form of AMPS, to a level that is safe for the device that is to be powered. While most chargers are DC, some are AC or pulsating DC, which just will NOT work place of the correct one. No, amps do not have to match, but the power supply or charger must be able to supply enough amps as required by the device being powered or charged. The input line voltage (wall or “mains” power) must be supported but is unrelated to compatibility with the device being charged or powered. But in terms of making the concepts usefully understandable to people who don’t care about Ohm’s law I think it works.

As long as the correct voltage is used, a device will draw only the amperage it needs, meaning there will not be “too many amps”. If you look closely at the small print on many power supplies, you’ll see they’re rated for anything from 100 to 250 volts. Your water analogy is incomplete: voltage is the water pressure, and amperage is the SIZE of the hose. Robust and reliable our plug-in AC to AC adapters have been designed, tested, and approved to the highest standards. in 2003 as a place to help you find answers and become more confident using all this amazing technology at our fingertips.
