With SDR sources, the 65C815K can look pretty good – not least because it suffers far less with backlight clouding than it does with HDR.Black levels can be overemphasised, plus there are some bright splotches in the corners that become noticeable in darker viewing environments. Nor does it take long for the set to be assembled: slot in the feet, tighten the two screws for each foot, and you’re done. The LED LCD panel used is not capable of high peak brightness levels like the more expensive LCD TVs on the market and that is why using dynamic metadata formats like Dolby Vision and HDR10+ makes sense, as they can be utilised for the panel's capabilities.

This means that it displays the image as intended with no unnecessary clipping of details until reaching the clipping point of the panel.

Google TV has made a lot of progress, but some advanced customization options, such as a separate account for TCL, could be a disaster for it. HDR PRO provides a superior High Dynamic Range experience with great contrast, shadow detail and vivid accurate colours. Although it supports HDR10, HLG, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, with 4K HDR content (Movie preset) it isn’t bright enough for full-screen HDR content; but it is more potent with smaller details and highlights as they frequently have more pop. The first is a traditional long plastic-bodied remote with plenty of buttons and number keys, along with the usual central menu button and directional keys. So in the Vivid mode, which is probably the all-round most enjoyable setting once you’ve got it set up right, you can bring back the lost shadow detail by increasing the black level setting to around 56, and setting the Adaptive Contrast to Low.
