About this deal

Too many things happening (a crime, a mysterious backstory, a lot of ecology chat, a love triangle, a bat rescue) made it difficult to follow.

A Murder of Crows By Sarah Yarwood-Lovett |The Works

Well, I suspect not - although it is intelligently written and generally avoids the excessive cheesiness of many cosy mysteries. When reading the acknowledgments at the end, I was not surprised to learn that the author herself was an ecologist. The Book of Saint Albans, originally printed in 1486, was a collection of advice and information on hawking, hunting, and heraldry.

In the last quarter or maybe third of the book, the miscommunication trope comes out in full force, which is a bit disappointing, but I’m hoping they will get themselves sorted out and have a grown-up conversation in book two. Treatises on hunting and hawking were very popular, and whenever the subject appeared in the 15th century, so too did lists of venery terms.

A young couple take shelter in the woods during a harsh storm and then disappear – Jack Russell (brilliantly named! The silence at the end of the line convinced Nell that he had gone and it wouldn't be rude to hang up. If you are allergic to love triangles, you may develop a rash while reading this book, as Nell also has a flirtatious relationship with a coworker. This is very obviously being aimed at, what could possibly be described as, "The Richard Osman Market".Experienced deer hunters will tell you that stags (bucks) and does are not usually seen together except during the rutting season, and when they are, the stag almost never leads, but follows, his does.
