These engineering choices give the aircraft the ability to land as close to the front line of battle as possible. The A-10C's digital avionics and communications systems greatly reduced the time to acquire and attack CAS targets. The A-10 served in the Gulf War (Operation Desert Storm), the American led intervention against Iraq's invasion of Kuwait, where the A-10 distinguished itself. A 1965 cost-effectiveness study shifted the focus from the F-5 to the less expensive A-7D variant of the LTV A-7 Corsair II, and a contract was awarded. With multiple hardpoints, the A-10 can be equipped with everything from bombs to mines to missiles of various sorts.

The Republic F-84 Thunderjet was nicknamed the "Hog", F-84F Thunderstreak nicknamed "Superhog", and the Republic F-105 Thunderchief tagged "Ultra Hog". The A-10 also participated in other conflicts such as in Grenada, the Balkans, Afghanistan, Iraq, and against Islamic State in the Middle East. The LASTE system was replaced with the integrated flight and fire control computer (IFFCC) included in the PE upgrade. Shortly after the Gulf War, the USAF abandoned the idea of replacing the A-10 with a CAS version of the F-16.
