Like many of the old buildings that line streets such as Royal Avenue in Belfast city centre, it’s a building that somehow blends into the cityscape due to over-exposure to the same city scenes. Currently she’s on a mission to try and photograph Millbrook House, a 9,000sq ft decaying mansion built in 1885 in Co Laois, before renovations start. Despite its present condition, however, Cairndhu is not actually lost to the world: the roof remains intact; and the house might yet be pressed again into action. At the close of the talk, as I looked through the replicated rooms, it’s easy to imagine how Abandoned Ni has whiled away many hours exploring buildings, getting lost in their history. The workhouses and prisons in Ireland at that time were suffering from overcrowding, which forced them to offload some of their more troublesome inmates to asylums, which meant that many of the patients did not actually need psychiatric care and were there for living purposes only, but it was against the law to refuse entry to anyone. I’ve done a paranormal tour of East Belfast’s Strand Cinema, explored Hillsborough Castle, traversed Belfast learning about street art brightening up many abandoned buildings in the city; and much more besides.
