About this deal

He also articulated the possibilities for greater incorporation of aesthetics (for example: better architecture, more art, more fine cuisine) in American life. He chose Buddhism, and sought membership in the London Buddhist Lodge, which was then run by the barrister and QC Christmas Humphreys (who later became a judge at the Old Bailey). It is fascinating how Watts foresaw the development of western culture, which may make The Book even simpler to understand today than by the time it was written. It’s a world of fast food, fast fulfillments - and avoiding Pain (even though pain and disappointment are two of the greatest teachers)! Both interesting, each in their way - I was interested mainly in Alan Watts, who has done much to elucidate zen buddhism, taoism, hinduism etc.

Watts takes you on a journey through the universe in an attempt to make people understand their meaning and presence in this world. These weekly broadcasts continued until 1962, by which time he had attracted a "legion of regular listeners". Though known for his discourses on Zen, he was also influenced by ancient Hindu scriptures, especially Vedanta and Yoga, aspects of which influenced Chan and Zen. He often said that he wished to act as a bridge between the ancient and the modern, between East and West, and between culture and nature.Later, not much later, Mike Miley was to introduce me to the real stuff, Sri Aurobindo and the lot, but Mom and Alan Watts got me going.

ISBN 0-395-45392-5, Skylight Paths 2001 edition of the biography, with new foreword by author: ISBN 1-893361-32-2.

This collection of essays from Alan Watts are all brought together in this highly rated book and deals with the relationship of mystical experience to ordinary life.
