About this deal

However, this forthrightness is very selective, and totally limited to his put downs of those who crossed him during his reign at Old Trafford.

In its construction and style the book sometimes feels rushed, as presumably it had to be, once Ferguson decided in December 2012 that he would retire the following summer. However potential readers should know that Sir Alex is both an admirable and a divisive character with many friends and foes. It reads like an acceptance speech at the Oscars, so many people to thank, that the thanks sounds less than sincere. I enjoyed reading his thoughts about some of the main events in his Manchester United career over the past ten-twelve years or so and the inside stories he had on such influential people at the club such as Roy Keane and Cristiano Ronaldo. The only thing that was bad about the book was that there were too many jumps from one topic to another with very little similarity in context.Ferguson does not mention Beckham's wife, Victoria, in the chapter of the book that he devotes to the player. The problem is, that the story is written in such a convoluted and scattered manner that I found it difficult to follow.

You do so by gaining their respect, getting them accustomed to triumphs and convincing them that they are capable of improving their performance. It's hard for me to express in words what Sir Alex Ferguson meant to me as a Manchester United fan, for he made a huge influence on our lives as lovers of the Beautiful Game. The manner in which he transformed a dwindling brand into a global superpower is outstanding and this book gives an account of the various decisions that facilitated the change. The book then covers the 2006-07 season which saw the Scotsman’s side bounce back in style and depose Chelsea at the top. Ferguson likes younger people with a bit of devil in them and he smiled to himself when he saw the manner in which Mourinho first announced himself at Chelsea as the "Special One".

Having never read a football related biography before, I was rather curious about what would be inside. Oh, my review seems to have delved more into my issues with Newcastle rather than the great man, Alex Ferguson, himself. I would have liked to know more about Ferguson's time before United as manager of Aberdeen and as a player for Rangers etc but that is skimmed over to get to the Manchester United years, as I think that it was covered in an earlier book. After briefly managing Scotland following the death of Jock Stein, he was appointed manager of Manchester United in November 1986.

There is some pretty savage criticism of the likes of Rafa Benitez and Steven Gerrard as well, but I suppose that it sells more books! His distaste for the "young reporters who dressed more casually" is plain and he says that by the end he found it hard to have any relationship with the press.

Patrick Barclay, then the Chief Football Correspondent of The Times, published this chronicle about the life of his fellow Scotsman and Manchester United Manager Alex Ferguson in 2010.The BBC3 documentary that sparked the row was a "horrible attack" on his son Jason, he said, and the BBC would not apologise. Four times winner of Manager of the Year, he has been the manager of Manchester United for thirteen years during a time when they have become the most successful and richest club in the world. Sir Alex created a purposeful, but welcoming, and much envied culture at the club which has lasted the test of time.
