A thoughtful novel with tremendous scope that tackles love and grief and a poignant story about the experiences that give each of us the courage to live life on our own terms. The book focuses on Nick the present day and also the story of his relationship with Anna ‘back then’, so we see multiple timeframes which explains much more about Nick’s personality and background, and perhaps why he behaves the way he does – he is often told, by others, that he lacks emotion, is very calm-headed and without real passion.

Some of the girls described her looks as crooked, and there was a certain strangeness to her face, a boldness and strength in the way the bones formed behind her alabaster skin. Anna is unable to marry outside her religion without being looked down upon and unable to leave without losing her family.Sal was a great character, I would have loved this novel if it focused on his experience with mental health. However, we know that this is simply not the case – Nick is a complex character having to deal with so much, not least the awful situation with his little brother which is heartbreaking to read.
