About this deal

It is forbidden to copy anything for publication elsewhere without written permission from the copyright holder. This sentence, with its tone, its setting, its haunting foreshadowing, sets the rest of the book up perfectly. I want to thank the publisher for providing me with a free copy through Edelweiss for an honest review! Stunning and atmospheric, this debut novel is a thrilling spiral into the hearts of two women separated by decades but inescapably linked by the dark and tangled secrets of Black Rabbit Hall. But I like to see the characters in these situations, driven sometimes by an unexplainable desire to find out secrets, whatever they may cost.

At first, the connection between the two stories – separated by several decades and connected only by this ramshackle old mansion – is unclear.

I didn't go into this thinking it was going to be a great work of literature, but even so, I just couldn't take it seriously at all, and the daft way the characters were portrayed made them annoying to me.

Fans of Carla Buckley and Lucie Whitehouse will enjoy this thrilling story of crumbling walls, forbidden love, and family sacrifice. The house may be in some need of repair but the family love their long summers spent there until disaster strikes and things are never the same again.

And in another time, place, world I would have been moved and appreciated the bittersweetness of it all and any shifty tears I might have shed. Amber Alton knows that the hours pass differently at Black Rabbit Hall, her London family’s Cornish country house, where no two clocks read the same. Lorna is convinced that this is the same mansion she and her mother visited together when Lorna was a child, and despite Jon pointing out the house's many leaks, crumbling plaster, and overgrown gardens, Lorna is enchanted by its romantic ambience, its beauty, and, most importantly, the fact that she feels a mysterious emotional connection to the place.

Lorna, on the other hand, is moving forward in life after suddenly losing her mother, a loss that is still raw for her.But this was the 60s and even though everyone in the family has been profoundly damaged by the abrupt loss of Nancy Alton they have no mechanisms to really talk about it or process it or whatever. Amid the sun-soaked hills of southern Italy lies the Romano family olive grove, where Lara lives with her daughter Rose and her granddaughter Bea. Laurie’s hasty decision not to tell Sarah is the second painful missed opportunity (after not getting off the bus), but Sarah’s happiness is so important to Laurie that she dedicates ample energy into retraining her heart not to love Jack. I agree to some extent in that my favourite part was Amber’s story, but I still think both timelines contributed nicely, and if you like suspense, this is a great technique to keep you guessing and turning the page, whilst simultaneously throwing you clues.

The setting is a huge, decaying house in Cornwall (old houses are a favorite of mine), and of course there are lots of secrets, lots of heartache, and lots of gothic elements. Perhaps she would have total success, but the fact of the matter is that Jack feels the same deep connection to Laurie. A little bit gothic drama, a little bit historical fiction, a little bit of romance, a good bit of suspense, with wonderful characters and a fabulous decrepit mansion with a personality of its own.Black Rabbit Hall is the moldering, ancestral home where the happy Alton family spends every school vacation.
