Aged for 30 days before being charcoal filtered, this cristalino tequila (meaning ‘crystaline’ in Spanish), is a real crowd-pleaser. Outstandingly complex, however you decide to drink it, you can expect notes of black peppercorn, dark chocolate, brown sugar and toasted coffee bean to boot. There are three expressions in the range (blanco, reposado and añejo), and it was the former that won over our testers. This tequila has a rich, deep golden hue, and mellow notes of lavender, hazelnut, bruised apple and caramel.Once I had the recipe figured out, I made a coconut pineapple margarita again using a regular silver tequila. Bags of flavour — including vanilla, smoked agave and lemon — make this best suited to a tequila negroni or other short serve. Strain into your favorite ice-filled glass (or rim it first with toasted coconut if you’d like) and garnish as desired before serving.The nose might be subtle compared to some, but look past the first sip and you’ll find this spirit offers decent complexity, including a hint of cumin and black pepper.
