About this deal

Looking at it there does appear to be a sealed lip (it looks like glue or silicone) under the worktop, a half inch or so in from the front edge, so I imagine that's the seal. He's also used clear silicone on both sides of the DW, between the adjacent units so I imagine this was his way of stabilising it (I was wondering why that had been done). I'm assuming that I will have to choose the new laminate from Howdens which grieves me because I've looked at B and Q worktops for example and they have a better quality worktop that is not showing exposed chipboard underneath. You will have to bite the bullet re paying for something that you shouldn't have to but at least it will be done properly. I'm not sure if they were fitted by the builders contractors or a howden fitter but they're replacing so thats ok.

Last built under dishwasher I fitted had an inline worktop joint within a few inches of the dishwasher so I also ran a bead of silicon into the corner between the w/top and the units either side of the dishwasher. My worktop is a Duropal which according to the internet has a profile with a seal that stops moisture and steam. However, the dishwasher also has the cutout for my sink's drainboard above it and all of the mdf interior is exposed.

Duropal laminate worktops are probably one of the better quality worktops, but even with the resin injected protective bead that they have, the moisture and heat/steam will still get into the top eventually. No, i said that a thermal barrier should have been fitted to the underside of the worktop above the dishwasher. the water will have to condensate somewhere, stop it forming on that part of the frame and next thing it will be all over the glass. There really isn't any issue with PVC edged tops, unless some muppet of a fitter has cut it off and then tried re-edging it .I don't have the details of the fitter any more and as he was my dad's contact and not local I doubt he'd come down anyway - I do however know a good local wood worker and plumber who could fit the strip for me. Failure to fit the protector will invalidate the warranty of the Dishwasher and will definately, in time, ruin the worktop. The Newton Condensation Strip can be used where the floor build is greater than 65mm to collect any condensation that may arise on the face of the waterproofing membrane. It is an ideal replacement for your appliance and is suitable for a range of Hotpoint, Indesit, Creda and other branded dishwashers. They often sell out early, but can also be heavily discounted later if they don't, so here's a round-up of some of the best I’ve seen.

Important: Make sure your brand and model number is correct by using the "Check this part fits your appliance" box above. The protective strip that was sent with your Dishwasher MUST be fitted to the underside of the worktop. As long as they allow the D/W to cool down enough before opening the door, then hopefully there shouldnt be a problem. This is a adhesive protection strip to apply to the edge of your work surface directly above the dishwasher door to help try to prevent any condensation damaging the worktop.

From your description of the issues, i would say all of them were caused from bad fitting in the first place.
