About this deal

After the BBC’s Great British Sewing Bee burst onto our screens in 2013, we all fell in love with the art of sewing and embroidery all over again, but the fun hasn't stopped with the end of this year's series. Esme recently told Prima: "I tutor a lingerie course at Central Saint Martins and I have an amazing collection of underwear dating from Victorian times to modern day. In her free time, Esme teaches Innovative Pattern Cutting for graduates and professionals students at Central Saint Martin’s College. Esme has been a judge on the beloved BBC programme since 2016 but when she's not presenting the show, the 73-year-old is a teacher at prestigious London art school, Central Saint Martins - which is where she learnt the ropes of fashion design herself.

More recently, Esme has released a memoir titled Behind the Seams: My Life in Creativity, Friendship and Adventure.Esme Young is speaking at the Cambridge Literary Festival on 19 November, sharing the story of her creatively adventurous life.

A list of what things she had done and I did not consider it self effacing at all as others have described it. I am quite nosey about people and it interests me to find out how people have arrived where they are and that's how I decided to read this book. You don’t have to do anything extreme – I’m not flying aeroplanes; I’m only harnessing the knowledge I’ve acquired throughout my life. Young developed sewing and pattern cutting techniques for underwear and swimwear which commenced her to work on special projects for ‘ Triumph underwear’ and ‘L’Oreal’. I was fortunate my father always encouraged me to pursue what I wanted to do – he’d trained to be a solicitor, but his passion was flying, so I think he understood. Launch presenter May Martin had already been hired at this point but when she left, Esme got the job.

Because it’s not about where people come from, what gender they are, what colour they are; it’s to do with their talent. Personally, I find her interesting because she's a woman who's never married, doesn't have children yet has created and is part of an enormous extended family she has met through her career. Last year, the TV star delighted fans by sharing an incredible throwback photo of herself in the '70s wearing a pink dress, a pair of gold sparkly tights, metallic heels and pink socks. Personally, I think that the true essence of a person is one who has made relationships and continued those relationships for years. It takes in her creative childhood, her time as a fashion designer with Swanky Modes, and her decades of work as a costume designer, making items including Renée Zellweger’s memorably cringe-inducing bunny outfit in Bridget Jones: “She kept telling me to make it tighter (she wanted to look bigger than she was for the character) and by the end, she couldn’t sit down in it.On 19 February 1949, at the Nursing Home, 34 Kimbolton Road, Bedford, to Patricia (née Cole), wife of Wing-Commander B. It was more like suits that young men wear today, tight fitting that have one button and slimmer trousers. May was part of the judging panel since the show's inception in 2013, along with Patrick Grant, who remains on the show, and has great chemistry Esme. One of the gimlet eyed judges, alongside Scottish designer Patrick Grant, she has a keen eye for detail and if a contestant has attempted to hide a gaping hole with a big bow, or left a thread dangling, she will spot it.

I tell Young that, reading her memoir, I was struck by her fearlessness – a quality that has stayed with her, and which she attributes to living in the moment. I didn't understand any of the sewing bits but then I love watching Sewing Bee because wat To fans of BBC One’s The Great British Sewing Bee Esme Young is a familiar face with her silver bob, flawless outfits and steal the show accessories. You’ll spend the two nights with breakfast at the gorgeous Country Living Lansdown Grove, housed in one of the oldest buildings in Bath.It was around this time that Esme met David Bowie, chatting to him on a windowsill at a party as they watched Notting Hill Carnival parade go past. She currently resides in London, and despite her TV success, she still lives in the social housing she has rented since the 1980s after being made homeless. Produced by Young’s brother Jeremy, the documentary film features the countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo. Many thanks to United Agents, Bonnier Books and the Sewing Bee for their support, without them this wouldn’t have happened. She told us Helmut Newton would be keen to photograph them and asked me to send some drawings to him.
