Webb’s book also shares (part of) a title and theme with GAYBCs: A Queer Alphabet , by Rae Congdon (Greystone Books, 2018). As more and more lesbians parent children by means of artificial insemination, the traits that many look for in the “donor” catalog are blond hair, blue eyes and taller in height.

The GayBCs is a heartwarming and accessible gift to show kids and adults alike that every person is worthy of being celebrated. I'm all for inclusion, but these topics for little kids are just more noise, which parents then have to explain. This book is supposed to highlight and inform the various identities within the LGBTQ* community, but it immediately sidelines us in our own story. Thanks to the author and publisher for making this change, and especially thanks to the other reviewers who spoke up about this erasure and forced the publisher to take notice.

I received an ARC at this year's BookExpo, and I was excited to support my local Philly publisher, Quirk Books. According to Becca Mui, GLSEN’s education manager, helping young people see themselves and understand the world around them and how diverse it really is benefits all students.

But the fact that this self affirmation costs a child their innocence, and healthy outlook on life is simply unacceptable. I believe parents could use this book with their young children to help normalize conversations about the full spectrum of loving relationships and gender-fluid identities. I think some of the terminology might go over kids heads, but this book is just an introduction so it won't make much of a difference.
