About this deal

Babette Cole caused something of a stir when she published Mummy Laid an Egg: it was described by The Bookseller as: "Funny, factual and frank. Puberty can seem dreadful or traumatic to children, and I think the wacky style slights or ridicules the intended reader. Cole firmly believed in children's right to knowledge about their own bodies and the accompanying pictures are never vulgar.

My positive would be that the author address's that everyone develops differently and at different times. When parents hear their children laughing, the children can say they're reading and learning at the same time. Hilarious illustrations of Mr and Mrs Hormone wreaking their revenge on the body, mixing their "Essence of Pube" and making mischief in the unsuspecting bodies of boys and girls as they fight their way towards adulthood will certainly raise a smile. Trying to educate little girls about puberty years before they'll have anything to do with it is one thing, but we both agreed that telling little girls that monsters taking control of their body wasn't such a great way to teach them about growing up.

The trouble with Gran is that, beneath her grandmotherly exterior, she's an alienand a rather lively, headstrong one at that. This book could never be used alongside SRE or Science to help explain the process of puberty because it is full of misleading and really quite unusual information. The Boy’s Body Book is here to help with expert advice, common sense tips, fast facts, and answers to all questions a boy might have.

Although the illustrations of hormones as hairy, ugly monsters is a bit bizarre (though probably more true than we would like to admit), we really enjoyed this book.

In spite of the promise of this book's title, nothing could prepare the reader for the wackiness inside. The text takes the form of a conversation between a small girl and her teddy bear, and is ingenious and funny.

Who else but Babette would have the temerity to tackle this subject in a picture book and the genius to carry it off! In Hair in Funny Places Cole hits home again in a canny little volume which takes a sideways glance at what happens to the body when it is hit by puberty. But it is the frankness and simplicity of the text that really bites, encouraging an understanding of one of the most difficult phases in a human being's life. Once again Cole ( Cupid ; The Silly Book ) pulls readers into a wonderfully wacky universe where ordinary rules needn't apply.Typical of Cole's no-holds-barred approach to bodily issues, over the course of the book she touches briefly on everything from menstruation to acne, body odour, and even erections. Puberty being a particularly unsettling time, Babette Cole has made this the subject of the fifth title in her bestselling series of ‘family dilemmas’. We will post your book review within a day or so as long as it meets our guidelines and terms and conditions.
