About this deal

foremost, even though this is deeply 80s), and just sometimes all these things that I don't like about them come together to make something that goes right through the other side of shit and makes sense ("Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now"). Arguably The Smith’s most well-known hit, ‘ This Charming Man‘, also from a Peel Session, is glorious. also featured on the soundtrack to the 1986 film Out of Bounds, but wasn't included on the accompanying soundtrack album. Hmm my Rhino copy had some weird white streaks on both sides of the vinyl and plays with noticeably loud surface noise throughout, which gets particularly distracting during quieter passages.

This gives them a rawer feel to their album contemporaries but unlike many session compilations this works pretty brilliantly as an album. Editions after 1987 feature the cropped version with the text superimposed, although the 2011 vinyl re-issue reinstated the original sleeve. Back to the Old House" is an acoustic piece with melancholic guitars and vocals, as opposed to the full band version on the "What Differences Does It Make? One of the signature elements of the group was the idiosyncratic pairing of vocalist and frontman Morrissey's dark and introspective lyrics with the catchy and bouncy melodies of guitarist Johnny Marr. Rourke’s bassline carries the whole thing and confirms that he is indeed one of the most underrated bass players of all time.

Jangly and atmospheric, it’s on moments like this that you realise how much of a breath of fresh air the band must have been at the time.Propelled by Andy Rourke's beautiful bass-line, Morrissey sings about a couple with different views on their relationship and how they are perceived by society.

Marr employed a jangle style on the guitar lines, which is characterized by an undistorted and heavy treble sound. It trumps their debut in every way and is more consistent than their subsequent records, regardless of how expansive they would go on Meat Is Murder, and The Queen Is Dead. Additionally, the old cover had a large sky-blue frame with the legends "The Smiths" and "Hatful of Hollow" above and underneath the picture. His intricate and incredibly complex guitar on songs like "This Charming Man" and "William" never leave me. As well as being a pun on Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest, it is an allusion to the impotence that Ernest Hemingway suffered in his final years.

This may be the best I’ve heard The Smiths sound on record next to my Japanese edition of the self titled LP. With the release of the record, they had codified the indie spirit, and moving forward, the middle of the decade was theirs. Also worth mentioning is the fact that the heavy stereo effect for the first 7 seconds of 'How Soon Is Now' (most noticeable when listened to through headphones) is greatly diminished on this pressing (it almost sounds like mono! It was an augmented version of The Smiths that you got on Hatful of Hollow, and as an adult, I now see what the stranger meant.

It was eventually released in the United States on 9 November 1993 by Sire Records, who had initially declined to release the album in the US.Great collection of Smiths' songs, which comes on a single (thick) disc, makes you wonder how many songs fit on a single side. Sire instead released Louder Than Bombs in the US in 1987—which is effectively a hybrid of Hatful of Hollow and a subsequent UK compilation album The World Won't Listen plus some tracks which do not appear on either. I absolutely love the great majority of songs on this, but I hate the fact that it is a compilation album with songs from their self-titled record.
