About this deal

Being able to shoot at night, handheld, with a variety of apertures and speeds available, is great, though if using a rangefinder you do need to find a bright area to focus on. For a good starting point try HP5 PLUS (or FP4 PLUS if in a studio or bright light environment) and, as you get more confident with exposures, then try the Delta films to see if you prefer the look.

If you like what you're reading you can also help this passion project by heading over to the EMULSIVE Patreon page and contributing as little as a dollar a month. This is a really cool process that works to reduce the negative contrast and increase sharpness by allowing the developer to exhaust itself on the highlights while having more time to interact with and develop the shadows.

As a general rule the slower speed films have a finer grain structure (when used at their recommended ISO).

Ilford HP - Wikipedia

See our article on comparing Single Use Cameras – Side by side photo comparison including Ilford HP5 and XP2 cameras. In this Ilford film comparison, you’ll be able to how each of the Ilford films stack up against one another. In practice, pulling the film, or over-exposing it and developing it regularly can create absolutely stunning images in high contrast scenarios.

Hypersensitive Panchromatic (HP) film was introduced in 1931 for dry plates and then again in 1935 in roll form. In fact, this is the developer that’s been a favorite of photojournalists for decades because of its reliability. Also, Ilford’s HP5 Plus 400 is available in various formats from 35MM 24 EXPOSURE, 36 Exposure, 120 Roll and even pre-loaded on the Ilford Single Use camera. for better exposures in low light would be to over expose and push process one half to one full stop over the speed you shot at (over exposure plus over development) but that’s my preference and yours may differ.

Unless you’re trying out a certain film type for a specific reason, the less you can spend on rolls for your street photography where the results are going to be more hit and miss than studio work, obviously the better. The film can also be reversal developed to produce slides by following a typical two-bath plus second exposure system and it’s my understanding that ILFORD are in the process of updating their documentation at the time of writing.Having a quick shutter speed and not having to spend time focusing is important when photographing subjects who will grab you and pull you away for photographing them. Ilford, a Harman Technology brand was founded in Alfred Hugh Harman ’s basement in 1879 — just 52 years after the first photograph was produced.
