These unique stills produce a spirit that’s full of character, sometimes a little fiery in youth, but responds well to long-ageing in wood. In 1818, a patent for a continuous distillation alembic led to the main difference between Armagnac and Cognac, which is double distilled in batches. This expression was aged for a whole decade in French oak, before being bottled at 40% ABV and presented in a simple though rather striking bottle. The wine is distilled through a column still and placed in white oak casks for a minimum of ten years to comply with the “Hors d’ Age” requirements for XO Armagnac.

Clés Des Ducs VSOP Vieil Armagnac is a blend of Armagnacs that have been left to age for a minimum of four years in new light oak casks.Today Janneau is not just one of the oldest of the great houses but also the world’s leading brand of Armagnac – available in 80 countries worldwide.

Armagnac is rich in flavour and, depending on age, will usually have notes of caramel, cocoa, prunes, nuts, vanilla, oak and cinnamon. This French brandy may only be produced in the Armagnac region of southwest France and is aged in oak barrels for extra depth. Clés des Ducs have been making their popular Armagnac since 1774 in Panjas, within the Bas-Armagnac region. Between the 15th and 17th centuries, Armagnac was traded on the markets of Saint-Sever, Mont-de-Marsan, and Aire-sur-l'Adour.From the wonderful Château de Lacquy comes a VSOP Bas Armagnac, which has seen seven years of ageing. Now, Janneau is one of just 3 Armagnac houses that uses pot stills, and doubled its capacity in 2013 to include the continuous “Armagnacaise” still. Wine is made from grapes from the Armagnac region of France and is then distilled through a column still.
