The ever-encircling stones gave me nightmares but still I watched and Marrianne was given an indelible pen at one point so she couldn't erase her drawings! Marianne Dreams has been the basis of several film, TV and radio adaptations, including the 1972 British ITV children's TV series Escape Into Night (which was quite faithful to the novel), and the movie Paperhouse (which was less so). I saw this in black+white when it was originally broadcast, but being only 7 at the time, all I could really remember was the lonely house, the drawing of the boy, the scribble across the window and the stones with eyes. Vikki Chambers, who plays the bed-ridden Marianne, went onto to slightly greater things spending a couple of years in Coronation Street (as a journalist on the Weatherfield Reporter alongside Ken Barlow), while Patricia Maynard went on to appear in Doctor Who (Robot) amongst other things and was also married to Dennis Waterman. You can contact them by whispering their name into the ear of a standing stone on a moor at midnight. She draws a boy sitting in one of the upstairs windows, and when she dreams again she meets Mark, who is also an invalid. She is currently on maternity leave, using available time (when her daughter naps) to redraft her new novel.

In the books despite her, I don’t want to say (Adam puts on a sneering voice) ‘ineptitude’ at drawing, but despite the fact she’s just a kid, and she’s no child prodigy as the book says. As time goes by, she becomes sicker, and starts to spend more and more time trapped within her fantasy world, and her attempts to make things better by adding to and crossing out things in the drawing make things progressively worse. She had met the psychiatrist and author Anthony Storr (1920–2001) during her training and married him in 1942. Ali: — she does draw, and she does use the same pencil, as far as you can tell, but it’s not really emphasised as being an important object. But then when they turn it on — well, we haven’t talked about THEM yet, but anyway, it’s a sinister radio.Ali: I think if they’d done that to start with then it wouldn’t have been scary, but because that’s pretty late on, when they’re making their escape to the lighthouse. Beyond the posts she could see the outlines of squat figures, standing round the garden like sentinels.

The acting has not held up well by today's standards or even compared to say 'Timeslip' from the same era of kids drama. They would certainly recognise the concept of two people inhabiting an alternative reality, to them it's just like Cyberspace. The first paperback edition, from Puffin Books in 1964, is catalogued by the Library of Congress as revised. The whole thing was obviously filmed on a cheap budget with just five cast members and what appears to be only three locations. Catherine Storr's novel, on which the show is based, was first published in 1958 and is regarded as a modern classic in children's literature that has already inspired a film and an opera.

In a moment of malice Marianne blackens out Mark’s window, raises the height of the fence to make it prison-like, adds more rocks, and on each rock draws a single eye. There are no birds or animals or people on the prairie, just the wind and the grass and a niggling feeling that something is very wrong.
