About this deal

The documentary was made by menopausal women, for menopausal women – and their partners and families.

When I Googled menopause, I scrolled down, and all I saw was images of sad-faced, white-haired, white women. They accused the government, which last week announced a new HRT tsar amid widespread shortages of the drug, of “paying lip service” to women and women’s health. However the longer I listened, the more I kept identifying symptoms and experiences that I hadn't even realised were perimenopausal. I now have to go and apologise to my mother because I now realise, as I was going through puberty and my hormones were everywhere, she was premenopausal and her hormones were everywhere too. However, this book was a fantastic introduction to the topic and very easy to listen to and to understand. While it is important to address the challenges faced by such individuals and how they cope with the loss of motivation during menopause, the book fails to provide examples or guidance for women who are not driven by those things.

In my personal journey, I have discovered that a synergistic combination of medication (Lexapro), transformative therapy sessions with my brilliant psychologist, and my own profound spiritual exploration has made all the difference.Yet the period of menopausal change is also a peak time for suicide, and one survey of 3,000 women who went to their doctor during menopause revealed that 66% were offered antidepressants rather than HRT.

I’ve been peri menopausal for at least the last year and reading this book has been such an eye opener for me.I now have a list of symptoms, knowledge about what kinds of treatments I might wish to try and am going to make an appointment. This book tells so many different, but so many similar stories of women with one common theme - we should talk about these things more and we should seek to be heard and be given help and support if we need it.

Although the book falls short for me in properly addressing the needs of women who are particularly sensitive to hormonal changes, such as those with existing mental health conditions, it does acknowledge that individual experiences with menopause can vary greatly. I thought perimenopause was just the run-up to the menopause and not a treacherous passage in itself.I also shouted at my boss only 6 weeks into a new job as no-one bothered to tell me about the mood swings and red-mist rage. Menopausing will also celebrate the sharing of stories, enabling women to feel less alone and more understood, and talk openly and positively about menopause. Davina and all of the narrators do a beautiful job of making this book feel much like a visit with a caring and witty friend. stars for the sheer enthusiasm and generosity of the author and her many collaborators that shines through!
