About this deal

Its cap posts securely, and its metal clip won’t break if you slip it over the ring binding of a notebook and let it thump around your backpack for a while. Generally speaking, thinner paper is more likely to show through and absorbent paper is more likely to bleed through.

Micron 05 fineliner set | 6 colours (POXSDK056A) SAKURA Pigma Micron 05 fineliner set | 6 colours (POXSDK056A)

The ink is pigment based, waterproof, permanent, fade resistant and the blackest of all the fine liners we've come across. The Pentel Pointliner had slightly more resistance to the erasing than the others but the best here is the Stabilo Point 88 Fineliner. I never got rid of my art supplies because I desperately wanted to do art more and I couldn’t afford new supplies as a broke college kid. The barrel has a glossy finish but this doesn’t seem to affect the holding of the pen, but sometimes the lid falls off the end when in use. However, I did find the pen easier to use for continuous lines and for blocking areas, rather than in a sketchy way. The plastic shield over all but the very end of the tip means this pen won’t leave ink on your ruler if you lay out pages in a DIY planner. However, if you are using a marker pen that is not compatible with your fineliner, it can lead to feathering and smudging. This makes them an excellent choice for writing, especially for people who are used to ballpoint pens or tend to press hard.

There is a slight grain but it’s mostly smooth and most fineliner pens take to this paper well (they’re not scratchy). Plastic tips can be damaged by too much writing pressure, so it’s best to use a light hand to prevent them from fraying and distorting. Pigma® ink, invented by Sakura over 30 years ago, continues to be the most reliable permanent ink on the market today. Pens that come in many different hues allow you to color-code entries and embellish them with cheerful doodles. The Sakura Pigma Micron Fineliner also seemed slightly narrower, however on closer inspection of the pen it does say the line width is 0.

The pen has a pretty basic design, reminiscent of a school pen, with its hexagonal shape and I’m pretty sure I did use these in school back in the day. If you want to make sure your work lasts for years to come, choose fineliners that are waterproof to protect against spills, light- or fade-resistant to guard against exposure to sunlight, and acid-free or pH-neutral to prevent them from reacting with paper. The Stabilo Point 88 also worked really well but did feather a tiny bit where the marker was applied thickly. They all have subtle differences and a different feel on paper, so try them all and see which best fits your writing or drawing style! For the water and Copic resistance tests, we allowed the ink to dry for 24 hours before drawing over it with a water brush and Copic Marker.

Its archival-quality pigment ink is also Copic-proof, so it’s the perfect choice for multi-media artwork and writing that needs to last. They are somewhat water resistant, so although they may smear, you won’t lose your writing if you spill water on it.Read our guides to Picking a Pen with the Right Ink, Permanent Inks, and The Best Pens for Food Labels for an expanded range of options. Thin or light-colored pens are best for initial sketches while darker or thicker pens are good for finishing touches. The Pentel Pointliner may not have had the blackest ink but was the easiest to get a solid block of black.
