About this deal

The illustrations are beautiful, with wonderful colours, and the few words are hopeful and supportive for when times are tough. A free eBook to raise awareness for Save the Children’s ‘Save with Stories’ campaign which is helping children most affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

In this heartfelt story about courage, change, and moving on, a girl and her companion fox travel together away from a sorrowful past, through challenging and stormy times, toward color and light and life. The images start off quite dark but as the journey continues the colours brighten as the sun appears. He will be reading My Dad Used to be So Cool by Keith Negley, a funny and relatable story about a dad who was in a band but who is no longer the cool guy he once was. Disclaimer: While the e-book has been released for free to raise awareness for Save the Children, sales of Candlewick books do not support any charity. We have all had to embark on a journey we didn’t expect, facing dif- ficulty and danger, often separated from friends and loved ones.

An engaging story about how children can show their parents they are still cool after all, even if it’s not in quite the same way. What is important, is to remember to be kind ( do no harm but take no shit) and this book helps with that. It’s a great message to share with children, not only during this difficult time but also any time in their life when they are not feeling good. There really is a lot to see in every page and it evokes a lovely atmosphere in the story, I’m sure plenty of children and adults will love looking at this book for the illustrations alone. Allowing the reader to focus – not only in these strange times but, indeed, at any time – on weird or difficult situations enabling exploration and discussions. You could stay on one page for ages, spotting all the little details hidden amongst the illustrations. With gorgeous, richly realized illustrations and immense hope at its heart, Rain Before Rainbows holds out a ray of sunshine for anyone looking for light.

A little mouse, and a medley of animals, create a home where everybody is welcome, no matter who they are.The emotion that comes through Smriti’s poetic writing is really powerful and it was a very happy challenge to try and translate that visually within the illustrations. I also love how detailed some pages are and the beautiful way that the streaks of sunlight are shown. What stands out most for me personally is the idea that the journey that the girl and her Fox friend find themselves on is obviously really tough and really scary, but they keep going. On Tuesday 16 March, actress Felicity Jones will read the very apt story, The Huffalots, by Eve Coy.
