About this deal

Simple, straightforward, and somewhat elegant, the design allows the strong sunburst blue dial to do all the talking, and all of the other design elements simply get out of its way.

Meanwhile, the lume-filled rectangular hour markers, paired with this color, are a nod to the legendary 62MAS. The Seiko 5 Sports often have 100 meters of water resistance which is enough to safely swim with, while older models usually have around 30 meters, which is not enough. Sure, it isn’t the height of engineering, but it’s nowhere near as foul as the Jubilee-style bracelet that Seiko used on 5s in the 1970s and 1980s. Previously, it was Malaysia and Singapore, currently – as per the sticker I’ve peeled off of mine – it’s China. While not necessary to enjoy a watch, hacking stops the second hand when setting the time to set it more accurately, and hand-winding allows you to wind it, well, by hand. The crown is small, but given that the movement doesn’t hand-wind anyway, you don’t need a bigger one. Traditionally, this was so dive watches could have larger hour markers, and be more legible when divers used them underwater. While some Seiko 5 watches are a bit too small, and others too large, the SRPE series fits right in between at 40mm.

It has folded links, feels light, cheap and jangly and adds no additional heft or feeling of security when wearing it on your wrist. While I will by no means encourage you to expose it to considerable hydrodynamic pressure, my specimen has proven itself more than capable of being an everyday watch. The watch uses Seiko’s 4R36 movement, an upgrade over the 7S26 used in some of the older, and smaller Seiko 5s, and adds hacking and hand winding. But, Seiko kept things minimal and classy and added just the right amount of bling without going overboard. Sunburst watch dials can be a bit flashy, as they vary greatly in different lighting conditions, while glossy or matte dials usually look rather neutral. However, since Rob is the source of entry-level Seikos for the Seikoholics in Germany, I asked a German friend of mine about that.

If a black dial isn’t your thing, there are also a few different variations, such as blue (snk807), cream (snk803), and even green (snk805). To view the purposes they believe they have legitimate interest for, or to object to this data processing use the vendor list link below. One of the first mechanical watches I ever bought for myself, the SNXS79, has an extremely luxurious and rich-looking sunburst anthracite dial. For whatever reason, the day I received it, on my way to the market I just had to listen to some Creedence Clearwater Revival. Back in 1983, my grandfather was working on a contract in Iraq – the state-owned electric company that he worked for was contracted by Siemens to modernize power lines in and around Baghdad.

It doesn’t last for an extremely long time, but fades out gradually and helps the watch be more legible in the dark and at night. It only differs from the 1st generation 7S26A in two details: the shape of the rotor has been changed (in the 7S26B), and the previous regulator has been replaced with the slightly more potent Etachron.
