About this deal

Because of the special MMCX version you might have issues hooking up your aftermarket cable to the IE 300. The Sennheiser’s low-end weight, which isn’t particularly agile but not exactly ponderous either, can really anchor a song that warrants it in ways earbuds rarely do, such as LNZNDRF’s Barton Springs At Dusk. in D minor, WAB103, as recorded by the Wiener Philharmoniker under the direction of Christian Thielemann at 24/96. The cable can detach from each earpiece thanks to a gold-plated Fidelity+ MMCX connector, which is seated in a recessed socket for additional strain relief. Quite often, the inherently limited design of in-ear devices means that the listener ends up with somewhat compressed audio (albeit with some clever tricks to mask this, in some cases) due in part to the smaller drivers.

The earbuds are lightweight and come with a pretty pocketable zip case, which is functional and utilitarian.

Rather, the IE 300 is an attempt to bridge the gap and offer audiophile grade sound quality in a focused and relatively affordable package (when considering other IEMs) to tempt you away from the likes of Sony’s true wireless buds. It’s not going to appeal to all listeners, and folks motivated mainly by convenience ought to skip it and try something else. This version lets the vocal really shine and the acoustic guitar tonality is on full display was well. While you can use the IE 900 to stream wireless audio, it sort of defeats the purpose of the product. Sennheiser doesn’t make use armatures in their designs so the IE300 uses a single 7mm XWB driver per side to handle the full frequency response; in this case a quoted 6Hz-20kHz.The IE 300 provides an audio-only experience and Sennheiser isn’t pretending to offer anything else. Perhaps oddly, wires above the split retain the same size and weight of the single wire below rather than going to a smaller lighter design. Plus, the album has one of my all-time favorite Zappa tunes, “Peaches en Regalia,” which a friend in high school transcribed from the record and arranged for our big band. The only exception was during Jon Batiste’s “Adulthood,” in which the bass was much more prominent and even a bit overbearing.
