About this deal

He claims he isn’t a murderer, but a soldier out of uniform, killing for the benefit of his country. I really felt like Swindells put me inside Shelter's head, right down to his reasoning regarding Sappho and patterns. He has won the Red House Children's Book Prize several times and in 1993 he won the prestigious Carnegie Medal for STONE COLD, a young adult novel about homelessness. In a 2010 by-election and in the 2011 local elections, Swindells stood as the Green Party of England and Wales candidate for the Worth Valley ward of Bradford City Council. In it, Link ponders the unjustness of a world where he is homeless and hungry, while a murderer like Shelter is housed in a warm prison with 3 meals a day. The ending is quite a depressing ending as you find out that Gail has been using Link as a piece for an article on homelessness. He also reflects on the irony that Shelter will have three square meals a day, a bed and a roof over his head by going to prison for life. The novel tells you about his life over the past two years, how he leaves his violent home and lives on the street, first in Bradford and then in London, where the story starts to take shape. The story definetly gave the message to never judge somebody you see on the street, as everyone has their side of the story. It includes chapter summaries, questions and activities such as letter, diary and descriptive writing, and class discussions on homelessness and drug addiction. Shelter develops an elaborate plan for luring young homeless people to his house, killing them, dressing them up as his own private army and burying them beneath the floorboards. His mother’s new boyfriend, Vince, drinks a lot and constantly makes obscene comments in Link’s presence. But what Deb doesn't tell him is that she's an ambitious young journalist on a self-imposed assignment to track down the killer and she's prepared to use herself as bait .

It transpires that Shelter has abducted Ginger by telling him that Link was at his apartment, badly injured. The character of Link, is a 17-year-old, is distrustful towards everyone… Until he pairs up with Deb, who is another homeless youngster. I also clearly remember the occasion of betrayal, when Gail told Link that she was doing a report on homeless people and then went away leaving Link alone by himself. I think the best thing about the book/novella is the shortness of it along with the written reality of living on the street. The verse forms “A Stone’s Throw” and “The Woman Who Speaks To The Man Who Has Employed Her Son” both trade with different positions of adult females and how they are treated.O'Brien, The Wave - Morton Rhue, The Red Pony - John Steinbeck, The Pearl - John Steinbeck, Stone Cold - Robert Swindells.

Also notable is Link's small and suitably quiet reflection upon the disappearance of another 'dosser': ". Scholars can use them for free to gain inspiration and new creative ideas for their writing assignments. Book reviews cover the content, themes and worldviews of fiction books, not their literary merit, and equip parents to decide whether a book is appropriate for their children. He feels depressed because there is nobody to protect him in case of danger, and because nobody cares about homeless people.

The novel also follows ‘Shelter’, an ex-military man who served for twenty nine years, discharged on medical grounds. We build and maintain all our own systems, but we don’t charge for access, sell user information, or run ads. Alternatively, Link's rejection of Gail/Louise can be seen as the character feeling such a degree of betrayal that he brazenly pushes aside help in a rash act of naive and youth-driven emotion over brains. Although he dislikes cats, he feels excited because the animal gives people the illusion that he is a friendly, inoffensive man. His new friend shows him how to survive, where to go for shelter and where the best begging places are.
