While I understand the need for books about the refugee crisis and to encourage kids to be emphatic, I don't feel this was the book. Many Hamilton units come with interactive Grammar Presentations integrated into the overall teaching and textual context.

It is the beginning of a new term and there is one spare place in the class – which is soon to be taken by a new boy; Ahmet.

It also teaches a great lesson to adults about humanity and how children do not judge and just take people for who they are with kindness, not through bigoted views. An important story of the struggles faced by refugees of all ages whilst addressing issues including prejudice and bullying. But after learning that Ahmet fled a Very Real War” and was separated from his family along the way, a determined group of his classmates band together to concoct the Greatest Idea in the World–a magnificent plan to reunite Ahmet with his loved ones. With the refugee crisis a virtually nightly news story and many adults, and world leaders, showing low levels of tolerance; this shows the resilience of children to make up their own minds about things.

This Ks2 resource focuses on Ahmet and allows your class to delve deeper into the character and the reactions and actions of other characters. Common Sense is the nation's leading nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of all kids and families by providing the trustworthy information, education, and independent voice they need to thrive in the 21st century. It's nice when adults tell kids the "truth about life," rather than keeping kids in the dark about world matters. Written from a child's perspective on the refugee crisis, it highlights the importance of friendship and kindness in a world that doesn't always make sense. They can be adapted for use with different themes and events from the story, or with other stories you study.

I wasn’t so sure with my son as he’s never read anything close to the size of this book, but I thought he could give it a try. She showed some newspapers, she explained, and also talked with her daughter on what she thought about this.I have to say that I was surprised when I read "your daughter" on page 226, saw her name on page 293 (Alexa) and when I saw the girl joining Ahmet at the last page. I was really excited when “I” went to give the letter to the guard - because guards always carry big heavy spiky things that could’ve cut his hand really badly!

He stayed up well past his bedtime, and then rushed in to see me and exclaim just how brilliant the book was, what happened to the characters, and how much he enjoyed it. The narrator, a 9-and-3/4-year-old British kid, along with a pack of friends, decides to befriend him: first with candy and oranges after school, then with soccer matches and displays of loyalty on the playground. Nevertheless, this engaging book can serve as a resource for readers who want to learn more about the global refugee crisis without being flattened by the weight of the world.
