About this deal

He has won many prizes, including the Hans Christian Andersen Award for Illustration, the Eleanor Farjeon Award and the Kate Greenaway Medal, and in 1999 he was appointed the first Children’s Laureate. An enjoyable story of childhood adventure and imaginative play, with beautiful illustrations and kind, friendly characters. Things change and kids grow up a little after little and soon they are gone and that’s the way it should be. Tredegar, the owner of the garden and ship, the children are soon involved in a wonderful season of imaginative play.

I covered up the title page before reading it to them, to see if they could guess what the children might have discovered in the garden/ jungle! Turns out the ship is "run" by two adults, who encourage the children to embrace their imaginations and travel the world in the ship. Battling their way through the dense 'jungle' of the garden, they stumble upon a life-size ship sculpted from trees and bushes. Quentin Blake’s use of frame, double-page spread and colour impacts on the emotional effect and provides an opportunity to discuss the visual literacy involved in reading picture books.I've never met a child who doesn't love Quentin Blake" - Daily TelegraphQuentin Blake is one of Britain's best-loved and most successful author-illustrators, and was made the first Children's Laureate in 1999. He taught illustration for over twenty years at the Royal College of Art, of which he is an honorary professor. On the page facing the text, ‘I t seemed as though we were heading southward through tropical seas’, there is a sequence of three framed pictures. Throughout the summer she, the Bosun and the two children sail the Seven Seas visiting exotic faraway places and having wonderful adventures.

It might not be entirely feasible to mimic this in your own backyard, but with the inventive spark this book affords, your kids just might be able to come up with an idea for a hide-away fort of their own. I also appreciated the fact that Blake explored an intergenerational friendship between the children and an elderly person in his story.

He recently illustrated David Walliams's debut book, The Boy in the Dress and his more recent book Mr Stink. You’ll see my updates as I’m reading and know which books I’m liking and what I’m not finishing and why. I would recommend this book for use in Literacy, or just for a good 'Story Time' book at the end of the day.

It manages to capture all the imagination and wonder of being a child, while still quietly touching on larger themes that will resonate with adults. Recommended to Quentin Blake fans, and to anyone looking for children's stories about games of make believe and/or intergenerational friendship.Quentin Blake is one of Britain's best-loved and most successful author-illustrators, and was made the first Children's Laureate in 1999. He taught at the Royal College of Art for over twenty years, and was head of the Illustration department from 1978 to 1986. On the one hand, you may feel that the past has been lost and can never be regained, although there will always be memories.
