About this deal

He mentions parts of Muriel were inspired by her and it was such a treat to see her own words and thoughts on paper. His character, Mickey, is seen as the hero, the only person in Hollywood who wants to make films for art, not commerce. When I was a little kid, I used to get some friends round and we’d make our own home movies, riffing on whatever horror/action flick we’d enjoyed that week. But when an overseas property developer, headed by a powerful billionaire, threatens to evict the remaining residents from their homes and raze Witchaven to the ground in the name of progress… all seems lost. The story is a reminder: don't take advantage of life or the ones you love the most because no one is exempt from the final destination.

The Haar was excellently paced, an easy read to breeze through, and stirred in me rainbow of emotion. Therefore shouldn’t she be embracing death and possibly actually having a chance to reconnect with her REAL husband in the afterlife? He goes on to state in the afterward that the character isn’t solely based on her, but there are elements of her life that he worked into the character, which really gives it a personal feel and elevates it just that much more.

Maggie’s Grave is scheduled to drop in time for Halloween, and the other two in 2021, so plenty to look forward to. It says ‘fuck you’ to Hollywood and ‘fuck you’ to us, but the biggest ‘fuck you’ should be reserved for Ulli Lommel, for making this crap and deciding it was even releasable.

Feeling hopeless and tired one foggy morning, as Muriel is walking the beach, she notices a unique sea creature that has washed up on the rocks and decides to rescue it. It is too bad that the one interesting aspect of the story, the monster found in the fog by the old woman, was overshadowed by the inane nonsense of the rest of the story. David Sodergren has always had a very specific and direct prose, excelling in the descriptions of things from the most mundane to the most extremely visceral. Anyone who knows me could easily point out that when I find something I thoroughly enjoy be it books, movies, podcasts, songs, food, you name it, I become hyperfixated on it. I live by the sea in Scotland and often see the haar rolling in, I won't look at it the same way again!Muriel Margaret McAuley has seen a lot in her 84 short years, and she’s going to see a lot more over the coming days. Look at his body of work thus far; ‘The Forgotten Island,’ ‘Night Shoot,’ ‘Dead Girl Blues,’ Maggie’s Grave,’ The Perfect Victim,’ and ‘Satan’s Burnouts Must Die! You always know that even a 300 page book of his will feel like a single sitting because you’ll be so entrenched in the world and his writing flows so beautifully, that you don’t realize how long you’ve been reading. Muriel McAuley is one of the most delightful elderly heroines I’ve met in literature, yet at the same time she has a terrifying amount of gumption and unwillingness to give in.

With that out of the way, we are left with about 30 minutes of new movie, which consists of obnoxious Hollywood types sleazing on women and then dying in the most ridiculous, absurd ways possible. At its core, The Haar is a preemptive revenge tale, as Muriel has not been kicked out of her home, but she will do anything in her power to make sure she does not get removed. The Haar starts as a story about a greedy American arsehole who is trying to destroy the small coastal fishing town of Witchhaven, Scotland, and slowly turns into a story about love, self-preservation, and the human condition. Sodergren does a fantastic job of describing true horror, some absolutely gruesome things happen in this story…and I could not get enough! It is the perfect love story with a Cthulhu twist, and although I don’t foresee anything like this happening to me, it has really made me think about my own relationships in my life.In truth, the sheer number of things he’s able to get away with here are appalling to a satirical extent, (at least I’d like to tell myself that). It's set in a small Scottish seaside fishing village that's under threat of a billionare land developer. Hello, I’m gonna keep this short because since I last updated my blog (umm, in 2020), WordPress has changed how it works and I have neither the time not the inclination to figure out its new quirks and eccentricities. It had tons of heart and a lot of sweet and tender moments, counterbalanced with absolutely horrific body horror, and anchored by a rebellious elderly female protagonist that you root for with all your heart and soul from page 1.
