Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely travelling further than the pantry of his hobbit-hole in Bag End. His best-remembered covers adorned Fontana ghost-story anthologies and Alan Garner novels, including The Weirdstone of Brisingamen. Lee went on to illustrate and even to help construct many of the scenarios for the movies, including objects and weapons for the actors. Lee left his art and design course, “disenchanted”, after a year; he had been warned at school in Ruislip not to go to Ealing “because it was full of beatniks”.
