I was still learning everyone's name and their position in the family, so it was hard to keep it all straight at first. I really enjoy this element though obviously it requires some suspension of disbelief but with the evocative descriptions of the house and its surrounds and some thoughtful explanation the author pulls you in and you go with the flow.J. Cooke landed on my doorstep towards the end of this month, so I squeezed it in so I could finish it by October 31, and I’m so glad I did, because it’s all about witches, PLUS its got a fantastic Halloween scene in it. Andrew and Alex have an exciting vision for the series, and StudioCanal is the gold standard for me when it comes to TV and film production. Her older husband, who is obsessed with fungi and the symbiotic relationship between some fungi and animals, is slowly developing dementia so his actions are somewhat erratic. There were two timelines that you could tell would eventually connect with each other and it was fun learning how it would all connect.

Book Review: The Lighthouse Witches by C.J Cooke – Kate Book Review: The Lighthouse Witches by C.J Cooke – Kate

Cooke tells her story with a spare, elegant prose that betrays a poet’s ear, and also a poet’s discipline. The narrative is split between three timelines, from the 17th century from a grimoire of magic, spells and diary, from the family in 1998, and in the present with Luna. At first it did and then I remembered if I can forgive Stephen King a million times for shitting the bed on an ending that I can get over stuff. Clover is the sister she remembers—except she's still seven years old, the age she was when she vanished. In an interview with The Nerd Daily, Cooke (who is married, with four children) was asked about her inspiration for the book. As the truth comes to the surface and the darkness moves in, Pearl must rethink everything she knew—and risk what she holds most dear. Liv Stay accepts a commission to paint a mural in an old lighthouse on the small Scottish island of Lon Haven.

The Lighthouse Witches by C.J. Cooke | Waterstones

A Lighthouse has been built above the sealed-in cave and Liv has been contracted to paint a mural there. If you’re going to have a sci-fi element, set that up better so it doesn’t feel like something you didn’t actually put effort into building and you just didn’t know where to take the plot, dropped into everyone’s laps. At no point did I feel like I knew how it all would end, which kept me looking forward to reading on. The local people warn Liv about ‘wildlings’, a fae (fairy) who takes in human form after a pact made with witches. That one provides interceding chapters made up of passages from a book, left in the bothy, referred to as a grimoire. We jump between the past (when witches were being executed) to the present (when Liv is seeing visions of abandoned children in the lighthouse) to the future, (where Luna is a grown woman, pregnant with her first child and struggling to piece together the mystery of why her mother and two sisters disappeared on Lon Haven all those years ago). It was the story of a young woman who goes missing, only to turn up years later though she hadn’t aged at all. Our first story centres around Mabel, a young girl who finds herself pregnant in the late 1950’s and is sent to Lichen Hall, a home for unwed pregnant women.
