Thanks to the new LCD, the removable, washable filter is different – it’s now a touch wider and isn’t, therefore, interchangeable with the V10’s filter – but otherwise it’s pretty much identical to its predecessor. Note that Boost mode will rarely be required; you’ll be fine in Eco or Medium modes for much of the time.

There are three power settings to choose from via a single mode button: Eco, Auto/Medium – effectively the ‘standard’ setting, and Boost. With the High Torque head, the new Dyson still lasts 60 minutes in Eco mode but goes for up to 12 minutes in Boost mode, an improvement of five minutes on the V10. The Dyson V11’s vacuum motor is also more powerful, delivering 185 Air Watts of suction power in Boost mode, up from the V10’s 151 Air Watts of power in Max mode. This year, Dyson continues to move forth with that promise by launching the Dyson V11 Absolute, the next-generation cordless model.

Unlock, slide them out, rinse under running water and allow them to air dry – although, as with the filter, this does mean your vacuum might be out of action temporarily. The LCD screen is easy to navigate, and is handy for letting you know if there’s a blockage and how much run-time is left. A new, higher-capacity lithium-ion battery means the runtime of up to 60 minutes matches the V10 models, despite the V11’s extra power, and the trigger switch means no wasted battery caused by the motor running when you’re not actually cleaning. In Eco – the weakest suction mode – the V11 will last 60 minutes on a full charge, the longest of the three modes, while in Boost mode it lasts between five and 12 minutes, depending on the tool you have attached.Bin emptying is as easy as it initially appears, with all the dirt and debris coming out without the need to poke around and get your fingers dirty.

That’s the same as the V10, because the V11’s larger battery has the more powerful motor for increased suction. There’s also a handy wand storage clip, which makes it easy to carry a couple of extra tools around with you. For most uses on the lower power modes, you can actually hear other people over the V11’s powerful motor – and it isn’t a distracting noise.

While the old V10 had only a basic display on the battery to show a rough level of charge, the V11’s screen shows a countdown timer, so you know exactly how long is left. The V11 moves around easily on both carpets and hard floors, whether you're using the High Torque cleaner head or the soft roller cleaner head, and the articulated design of the heads makes cleaning under furniture a breeze. With the V10, you’d have to switch to the soft roller head before tackling the job because the direct drive head simply pushes larger particles like this out of the way. It’s easy to get to the filter to remove and replace it for cleaning, but you do need to rinse it thoroughly before leaving it to air dry, which could potentially leave you without the use of a vacuum for up to a day.

That’s quite brilliant, particularly since the manual is likely to be the first item to get lost at the back of a cupboard. The motorised brush makes light work of each step, with standard mode our preferred choice of power mode. If you want a single vacuum cleaner for all jobs, rather than having to switch between a plug-in cleaner and a cordless model, this is for you.

When you’ve finished vacuuming, just drop the machine into the dock where it will charge ready for the next use. It has a more powerful motor than the V10 and a bigger battery, while integrated sensors lying within the machine’s new motorised head allow it to adapt to its surroundings and save energy. Impressively, you can hear the V11 step up a gear as you move over carpet, applying the right level of suction.
