About this deal

The dialogue didn’t seem natural and was somewhat cringey, and the character’s reactions were too OTT. In these days that we live in, where there can be so much tragedy in our news and perhaps much trauma in the story of our own experience, it's so good to read a book that leaves your heart warmed and hopeful.

In their small town of Northbridge, there are mixed reactions, and Arthur isn’t at all sure about the dating site his daughter-in-law-to-be signs him up to: surely he’s too old for all this? After hearing Arthur’s account of being a closet gay in the sixties, being subjected to conversion therapy at his father’s request, Teddy is grateful that attitudes have changed, but still wary of coming out, given his mother’s reaction. The problem I have with some things getting skipped or not getting enough explanation is that this story, even though it's feel-good, handles really serious problems. I just think the author had a great idea but churned out something predictable and without any real depth or meaning.

Thus, they break up because Ben has broken Teddy’s trust (fair enough), but there’s hardly mention of how badly Teddy had been treating Ben up to this point. However, his wife Madeleine was very interesting, but sadly her time was limited and we didn’t get anything from her point of view. This unbiased review is from an uncorrected proof copy provided by NetGalley and Harlequin Australia. In Arthur and Teddy are Coming Out we learn that life is made of these quiet, ordinary moments just as much as the dramatic occasions. If you’re looking for something that will reflect your own experience, or if you’re looking to widen your understand of what it’s like to live as a queer person, I highly recommend reading this. Each chapter alternates between Arthur and Teddy's perspectives, which works well, and you get the expected range of side characters who mostly all turn out to be good people as this is meant to be a happy book (the somewhat of a villain character was very obvious from the start, as you might expect). She decides to show up at their charity fundraiser and that manages to earn her forgiveness immediately. Consoling himself after work at the pub with his best friends, Shakeel is sympathetic, but Lexie tells him not to be so sensitive. There were plenty of lovely moments in the story, along with ones that were realistic to the situation and not nearly as lovely. And because all that obviously leaves so much free time, she also cooks and bakes and generally 'keeps them fed'.

I was excited when I saw this late-in-life coming out story since there aren't many of those out there.Meanwhile, his 21-year-old grandson, Teddy, has also been trying to find a way to tell his family the same thing. In conclusion, by writing this review I have talked myself down from giving this book 2 stars, and now I’m rating it just the one.
