About this deal

Carpenters’ scribes will often mark the workpiece with a pencil line instead of a metal pointed tip. They are hardy for their size and are usually made from metals like aluminium and steel alloy with a tip made from tungsten carbide or another hard material like diamond.

They can also be used with various hand tools and are used to mark out the areas to be measured or cut etc. Scribing tools are simple and easy to use and are often used with various other hand tools including saws, chisels, hammers and more when carrying out various tasks such as carving or measuring. Machine Mart Limited is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, register number 703528 and acts as a credit broker and not a lender.Scribers can be manufactured from a wide range of materials including aluminium, chrome vanadium steel and feature a tip often made from tungsten carbide or diamond. Scriber tools are also a much safer and accurate choice for marking, unlike a knife that can potentially damage the material or cause injury. The line marked with a scriber is much more precise than if marked with a pen or graphite pencil and as a result they allow for better overall results in the accuracy of hole placement, cutting etc. However for more everyday domestic marking a scriber might be less useful due to the mark being difficult to remove one made.

Scribers are available in many forms, however, the two most common are the engineer's scribe and the carpenter's scribe.Lead times are shown on the product and trolley pages and are always advertised in working days (Monday to Friday). Ink can also be added to enhance the marking line and they are much safer to use than bulkier tools like knives. Other advantages of scribers over other marking tools are the lines they make are far thinner so they are more accurate and marking ink can be used with scribed lines to make them more visible. Mostly used by professional tradespeople or DIY enthusiasts, scribers can be used in a wide range of industries, from woodwork and carpentry, to machining and engineering, even domestic DIY. Engineer’s scribers look similar to pens, whereas a carpenter’s scribe can take many different forms. Scribers offer precision lines due to them marking the surface by leaving a shallow scratch which is more difficult to erase than graphite or pen.

With a knurled body for high grip and precision ground points for accurate marking, the double-ended design makes the product ideal for marking out in hard to get places such as grooves. They are most commonly used to mark out metal work pieces due to their advantages over other marking methods on this type of material. Engineer’s scribers are used instead of pens or pencils as scribed lines are shallow scratches that can’t be smeared or rubbed off. This means scribers are not always the best tool for marking out an area of the workpiece that will be visible in the finished part. The durable pointed tips allow you to produce a shallow scratch that won't be easily rubbed out, making them ideal for producing a faint line when measuring or marking materials with precision. We started exhibiting at model engineering exhibitions in 1994 and realised from the shows that people wanted quite specialised tooling for their machines and also a wide range of tooling which they could adapt to suit their needs. Scriber tools work similarly to a pencil by creating a faint line via the tip when drawn across materials. Its knurled body gives a positive finger grip and the sharp ground points are heat treated to give a long life.
