About this deal

It sure can be interesting and add a layer of realism or an “oh, neat” moment, but does not have a huge impact on the quality of the writing (at least for me). They’re there for a while the both of them start healing from their burns, but Aedan is still covered in bandages. Also, all of the melodrama you described is not leading to OP individuals or epic adventures, instead the book is a slow burn which focuses on an in-depth look at forestry skills as well the concept of countries using diplomats as spies. Can’t disagree with anything here… and yet Dawn of Wonder has sold a TON of copies and racked up the awards. They’re talking in a foreign language, so Aedan goes to Fergal to translate some of the words he wasn’t sure about.

They stopped working and that would be a big deal in our real world, but it might not be in Renshaw’s. The pain was intense, and as the raw skin was exposed, he felt a sudden vulnerability, for the cauldron had been a kind of shield. I’m glad to hear that something urgent is happening in the human world, since the… awakening went nowhere. Whether or not the friends actually wanted to share them tended to have little effect on the outcome.Instead of halting before the main courtyard rail, the horse actually jumped it and pounded up the fine lawn to the very doorstep of the manor house. She has to do it because Aedan is the embodiment of toxic masculinity, so he isn’t allowed to feel fear. There’s a lot of descriptions in this chapter, and Renshaw is good at writing descriptions, but summarizing descriptions isn’t very fun so I’m not doing it. Aedan, Liru, Tyne, Fergal, Osric, Merter, and three unnamed soldiers go down into mysterious depths.

In the beginning of the chapter Aedan is going around the city with his friends and other soldiers – including Cameron the guard that Aedan met when he first arrived to Castath – dressing up as women and other easy-looking victims so the hooligans will try to attack them, then they’d take the hooligans down instead. It might be possible to pull it off if the narrator got into her head and explained the mood shifts, but Renshaw doesn’t do this. Aedan feels nostalgic while they sing a story about a girl who gets lost in the woods and gets adopted by a bear. The date goes well, but throughout the chapter it’s shown that Ilona cares more about money than anything else so eventually Aedan doesn’t have a crush on her anymore. However, the biggest problem here is that Renshaw uses this stillness to invoke curiosity, milks it for all it was worth for several paragraphs, and then gives us no better explanation than “a thing happened somewhere. Iver tells Aedan that he’s going to really mess with him if Aedan doesn’t do everything that Iver says.

But then, after everything that just happened, Nessa still wants to stay in that awful room hoping he’ll come back! I know that this is something other readers will love as the schooling part of a fantasy book is, in my opinion, always a winner - think Roke from Le Guin's Earthsea, Hogwarts from Rowling's Harry Potter, the University from Rothfuss's Kingkiller Chronicles. But he couldn’t, so instead he grabbed a plank from a broken crate and assaulted the nearest wall, feasting on images of gory revenge. They’re so rare and valuable that kingdoms will go to war over them at a drop of a hat, and Thirna’s found a whole lot.A hush of anticipation swept through the trees, causing forest creatures to hesitate in their scratchings and birds to falter in their songs. Maybe next chapter, Aedan will pressure Emroy into putting a wasp in his own rods as a hazing ritual.

Tyne chalks up Clauman’s violence to an overabundance of pride and says that pride is terrible, but wonders if there’s hope for him. We are taught to think that the battle lines separate the good from the bad, but the truth, as you are beginning to understand, is less comfortable. This is definitely a book that should be recommended reading within the epic fantasy genre and I am greatly looking forward to the second instalment.Predictions: Clauman will have a moment where he reaches out to Aedan saying he’s changed and Aedan won’t have anything to do with him. Ganavant shows Aedan’s group Jorla to demonstrate what happens if they were to betray war room secrets. Renshaw also tries to tell us that Thomas is about to jump because Aedan “had become an expert in coaxing and nudging,” but who would be convinced by the poetic description of the jump he supposedly gives?
