Every day, the team in the kitchen fires up the in-house smoker and wood-fired oven to knock out everything from ribs, steaks, and burgers, to tapas-style share plates, pizzas (which have Murray’s XPA hand-mixed into the crust for the ultimate crunch), and desserts. Set within a vast mid-century warehouse, it’s pouring drink-now styles that occasionally veer into experimental territory. A short week later, she had an earnest, bitingly witty comedy series on her hands that would eventually be snapped up for production by Australian streaming service, Binge. And so begins the story of Colin from Accounts — not only the name of the dog, but also of the eight-part series made by and starring Patrick Brammall (No Activity, A Moody Christmas) and Harriet Dyer (Wakefield, The Invisible Man).

Once inside their large corrugated iron brewhouse, you’ll sample their 16-strong core range as well as an array of limited releases too numerous to count. Launched back in 2012 by Chris Benson (an avid homebrewer) and his mate Adam Klasterka, this dynamic duo has always put a big focus on pulling out full-flavoured, or “amplified” ales. At each of the three breweries, learn about their philosophy and brewing practices, then taste a range of craft beers and maybe even cider.While the craft beer here will certainly change your life, the brewery grounds are a real showstopper. The converted warehouses – adorned with street art and fairy lights – are just as vibrant as the beers they serve.

They joke about being each other's weird mate, and openly wonder if two people can be friends once exposed mammary glands get involved. These venues have also become vibrant community hubs where everyone – from hipsters to hounds – is welcome.Of course, beer is poured at every pub, but there's something special about drinking it right where it was made. Leonardo di Vincenzo, the founder of notable Italian brewery Birra del Borgo, is one half of this distinctive operation. It was at this point that I realised that several women in the group had a particular laugh that resembled a Kookaburra.

The house-brewed beers, which can number up to 11 depending on the season, are all inspired by the area’s whales including a lip-smacking Black Whale Stout, Little Calf Session Ale, and Old Tom’s IPA, named for the iconic orca that was a friend to the area’s whalers nearly 100 years ago. Combining stylish design and an experimental approach to brewing, this tiny operation by a husband-and-wife team is doing it like nowhere else in Marrickville. There are currently 14 beers on tap in the tasting room, including a grisette, weisse and an English barley wine. From the table by the door (to open), the table in the corner ( a group of workers, with a woman talking about her drug experiences in Queensland), to the table next to the other solo travellers, against the back wall, which was an excellent spot for people watching. Yet in 2017, they managed to outdo themselves by replacing the pokies with their own brew house, Humpback Brewery. The core range here is pretty packed to the rafters with a “true blue” Aussie bitter, a chilled-out XPA, two IPAs, a coastie lager, two pale ales, and a pretty groovy on tour mid-strength perfect for hangs at the beach, festivals, or a road trip even further up the coast.

It’s not just the beers that draw locals and visitors to the doors of Cascade Brewery in historic Hobart. Sunshine, water views and beers that’ll get your mouth watering; tucked under the Story Bridge, Brisbane’s Felons Brewing is the place to be in this sun-drenched capital.
