About this deal

Add to it such strong album cuts as "Massacre", "Johnny the Fox Meets Jimmy the Weed", "Warrior", "Suicide", and "The Rocker", and you have the ultimate Lizzy album. The sleeve notes were written by Malcolm Dome and included a debate of exactly how much of the album was live and how much was overdubbed. The packaging is good quality and the book is a fun read with some new quotes rather than the same tired old interviews. Rock doesn’t need saving in 2024, but it’s nice to be reminded just how thrilling and relatable three chords and the truth can still be. The Thin Lizzy Live and Dangerous Deluxe Box Set is more than just a collection of music; it’s a piece of rock history.

Musical content is outstanding, but I agree there is nothing 'super deluxe' about extremely tight cardboard slots scratching the discs - in my case, half of the set. That way, if Lizzy’s extra-curricular activities compromised future US tours – and they would – the band would at least have proof of their prowess for anyone who cared to listen. The accompanying softback book is a delight, filled with essays, memorabilia, press ads, and photographs.

Working with producer Tony Visconti, Thin Lizzy had had huge success with their previous album Bad Reputation, and the group wanted to work with him again. Various studio overdubs were made to the live recordings during early 1978 in Paris; exactly how much of the album is overdubbed has been a contentious topic since its release. For sheer sensory excitement, though, the opening power chords of Lizzy’s take on Bob Seger’s Rosalie take some beating, and the inherent spunk of Brian Robertson’s playing is manifest on four different instances of his extraordinary wah-wah solo on Don’t Believe A Word. The setlist feels like a greatest hits compilation, with classics like “Emerald,” “Opium Trail,” and “Bad Reputation” making appearances.

a stuffed toy mascot Robbo plonked on his amp-head each night) they threw skinny, angular shapes as Lynott strafed the crowd with a beam reflected from his bass guitar’s mirror scratch-plate.

When we describe the sleeve we are describing the printed paper cover or booklet that is included inside the case. The twin guitar attack of Brian Robertson and Scott Gorham, the rhythmic prowess of Brian Downey, and the lyrical genius of Phil Lynott make Thin Lizzy a band to treasure. Few bands have ever matched the explosive energy that Lizzy creates on such tracks as "Jailbreak", "Emerald", "Rosalie/Cowgirl's Song", "Don't Believe a Word", "Are You Ready" and "Sha-La-La", while their sing-along anthem "The Boys Are Back in Town" proves even more vivacious in a live setting.
