About this deal

Ask MetaFilter is a question and answer site that covers nearly any question on earth, where members help each other solve problems.

For the first time, consumers aren’t tied down to one-off Nintendo charging connectors (between the original Nintendo DS, the Nintendo DS Lite, and the Nintendo DSi… there were three different charging connectors across six years). But the official charger with PD can charge super fast while playing Zelda, and that's why you should want PD. Also, any downloadable content (DLC) or codes that usually come with these items are likely to have been redeemed already and are not available for reuse. Im guessing the 15V is for the Nintendo Dock which allows you to play-n-charge at the same time so thats probably why it can supply the 5V and 15 Volts. I assume that the amps on the supply side can be higher -- it just means there's headroom when I use this brick.

I don't mean to be rude, but I'm kind of surprised that nobody has said that the switch only takes 5 volts and 2. So someone help me make sense of this beast is it powered by 5 volts or 15 volts, and if its 5 volts then why does it say input of 15 volts? Best answer: The charger and the device will negotiate and (usually) pick the highest voltage/current that the device and the charger can handle. That’s about as simple as I can try to get things — do know that the devil is in the details and there are lots of details, exceptions, and edge cases. The replacement Nintendo Switch Charger is designed to be safe and reliable and features an over-charge protection system to ensure your gaming console doesn't get damaged while it's charging.

However, please understand that an inverter that plugs into the 12V "Cigarette" port can not pull enough current to power most power tools or anything that heats like a coffee maker, curling iron, hair dryer. I want to reduce the number of chargers I travel with, and I'd love to not have to unplug the Nintendo one from the entertainment spaghetti every time. There is no reason it wouldn't work with a proper sine wave inverter as the output should be indistinguishable from mains, but many cheap ones only output square wave which can be a problem. If you’re open to using other third-party accessories then you’ll probably be comfortable with a Safe or higher safety rating.party docks fried Switches because of shit power management sending more voltage than the Switch needed. Multi Protection and Safe Charge--switch power built smart PD IC chip comes with CE/FCC/ROHS Certifications, and provides the over-charging protection, over-voltage protection, over-current protection, short-circuit protection. The 5 volt one I believe wouldn’t harm it but also I think would provide no where near enough power for the machine to turn on. This fast charger features a 15-volt output, which is much faster than the standard 5-volt charger that comes with the Switch console .

However, the Switch often requests less power than a charger is capable of delivering (more on this later). Not really any different from the myriad of phones out there with their own custom fast charging protocol like OnePlus. Good - The item shows wear from consistent use, but it remains in good condition and works perfectly. Isn't it possible that the power adapter has 2 different outputs (5/15), because it's so intelligent that it choose what voltage instead you are recharging only the Switch or the Switch and 2 joy-cons? What’s causing the most consumer confusion is that we’ve grown accustomed to relying on the output markings/label of a charger to tell us how much power is sent.
