About this deal

Equally important to me, is the fact that the lined pages feature a reasonably generous row height of 7. The colours for the Ryman book included a pastel pink, and a pastel turquoise which did not particularly appeal to me and which I thought would get grubby in time. The instructions advise letting go of three drops of ink at the end of filling, turning the pen upright and then turning the piston back to the home position to draw up any surplus ink. It came with a very enjoyable medium nib but I bought a spare nib in Selfridges in a Fine and now have this in the Fortuna, which is beautifully firm and precise.

It was quite extraordinary: it seemed like no time at all since we were all at school together and now suddenly the topic of conversation is retirement. The other two buttons are plus and minus, to go up or down through the 10 brightness levels, in whatever colour you have selected. My experience of Moleskine A5 notebooks had been that the paper was generally not fountain-pen friendly, as most inks bled through the paper making the other side unusable.I am not certain whether it is then injection moulded to make the barrels and caps or whether it is formed into solid rods which are turned on a lathe.

Interestingly, the pages are about 7″ wide by 10″ long, making the book a handy compromise between the usual A5 and A4 sizes:- Agenzio notebook in blue, sandwiched between A4 and A5 notebooks. During the morning coffee break with the MB Pop insulated bottle, at lunchtime with the MB Warmer heating lunch box or MB Tresor kids lunch box, at snack time for little (and big) foodies with the MB Gram snack box, at the gym with the MB Positive reusable bottle, and even through till dinner with the Made in France MB Original bento box or MB Gourmet transparent lunch box to use as a doggy bag at a restaurant. Admittedly I have filled far more pages with idle paragraphs of pen and ink sampling from the back, than I have with any meaningful writing from the front, but then it has been a source of recreation, reached for often when tired from the working day and in need of some pen-time escapism, writing simply for the joy of using a fountain pen on nice quality paper and seeing paragraphs of handwriting from different pens, nibs, and inks and in different writing styles. Perhaps it was partly out of nostalgia, as well as being a bargain, but in January 2019, I found myself again in John Lewis Brent Cross where I bought a new Expert in light blue with a shiny chrome cap. It is super-smooth, gives a nice line variation and is not too wide (given that the nib is held at an angle so you do not get its full width most of the time).Alternatively you may wrap the whole section in several layers of paper and give it a few deft shakes to get the water out by centrifugal force (pro tip learned from Brad of the Pen Addict). The square, clear plastic lidded boxes are very handy for keeping fountain pens if not in current circulation.

It is remiss of me not to have covered the Waterman Expert in the years since this blog was launched.I found it an ideal pen to use for work, as being reliable and well-behaved, but not too precious and ostentatious. It is a testament to their good design, that Waterman Experts are still sold and largely unchanged except for some cosmetic changes.
