About this deal

If the rear camera is not plugged in at power on, then none of this happens ie no PiP appearance at all - and this is as it should be. So assuming both units are plugged in all the time, when switching on, you would still get that prompt ie where the pip should appear? By connecting the GWRC (rear cam), you get front and rear footage saved onto one SD card, both recording decent 1080P quality footage. The 512 GW Dash Cam can record at 1440p HD at 30 frames per second or 1080p at 60fps to ensure that even at fast speeds everything is still caught on camera, making it ideal for motorway driving.

Other cables we’ve seen have been significantly thinner, and it’s hard to conclude Nextbase chose this because if offered better quality. You can copy the files onto your PC to save, view them using your computer's media player, or view the files using the correct Nextbase app- Replay3. Unfortunately the Series 2 Rear Cameras will not work with any other devices apart from the ones I have listed above.

At that point we praised it for offering great quality video and the possibility of adding a rear camera in the future. The biggest and most irritating issue I have with 512GW with rear cam is the need to switch off and switch on to cure a fault (this is Nextbase own advice). If the Dash Cam does not appear as a drive on your PC, please press the reset button on the underside of your Dash Cam and try all the USB ports on your computer.

I have just purchased nexbase 512gw front rear camera from Halfords and fitted it to an Audi A6 avant. Please check that your Camviewer app is on the latest version available and that your phone has Wi-Fi turned on.

Ok - off/on is all that's needed but the unit takes 3 to 4 seconds to go into power down mode and another 3 to 4 seconds to power up and perform as expected. Then start of operation each day would just involve plugging rear camera into base unit, plugging base unit with screen mounted holder. And on that score, the 512GW is roughly on a par with the 412GW, despite the upgrade to a Sony Exmor R sensor. You’ll get the best quality if you set the circular polariser to minimise reflections of your dashboard, but its effectiveness will depend on the angle of the sun – you can’t continually rotate the filter as you drive of course. Although, when it isn't so bright (when driving through the village in the above video), the footage is a bit lighter and you can see details like reg plates. The lens isn’t the best: there’s a fair amount of barrel distortion, but quality is the best we’ve seen from any rear camera.

However, the mount is very, very adhesive so make sure you get it in the right place first time because it's very difficult to remove. The images are crystal clear and give all the info you will ever require, such as position, speed, time etc. This allows you to see the video along with all the other recorded GPS and G-sensor data, plus your location on the map.

Nextbase says it uses so little power in sleep mode that it will work even if you leave you car parked for several weeks.
