Surely it must be inevitable, that the two former best friends end up meeting, and just so happen to clumbsily work their way through their simultaneous tragedies and come face to face with what in their hearts they've known all along . Thinking that she never loved Mike in the same way her marriage falls apart and she divorces Mike and is back in touch with the also now divorced Patrick. Couldn’t care less about anyone by time I finally got to the last few chapters, and am rather glad I’ve finished it. Even though there were moments I was shaking my head at one or both of them, Houghton has again given us two characters we can’t help but root for — both as individuals and together, I think. Mother of a beautiful daughter, Aimee, she is going through her divorce after 10 years of marriage with Mark.
The problem with so many romance books is that they try to skate on the popularity of the trope, rather than the strength of the characters. It's a very realistic book, because although I had never had the opportunity to understand everything that involves a divorce, the dilemma that Celine is going through is exactly the same that any woman feels at the end of a relationship. A lot of the time, these kinds of books are as sickly sweet as the icing on the carrot cake I was eating at the time of writing this review but – much like her debut – Last Time We Met isn’t all sweetness and light.This is an emotionally driven story, and even though it revolves around the difficult topic of divorce, the story transmits more hope than regret. The themes of family, forgiveness, loss, and grief were so thoughtfully portrayed throughout the whole storyline. Both of them have closer, healthier friendships with other people (Sal, Rob, Reggie, Nurse Clara) and I didn’t feel much chemistry between them either – I felt Eleanor had much more chemistry with Ben, and I kept expecting Fin to realise that he was actually gay or asexual as I got no vibes that he was attracted to any of the women we see him with.

We literally get no interaction with them that shows their feelings for each other, there is no chemistry, they barely have four conversations after not seeing each other for fifteen years. Fin has a history of addiction and has his own family troubles to deal with, and he is clearly feeling disconnected from his hometown having spent so long in the US. Emily Houghton’s debut novel- Before I Saw You– was one I fell hopelessly in love with, and it still remains a favourite today. As she deals with the mixed emotions of an amicable divorce, Celine becomes preoccupied with her daughter and the dating agency she founded—not least when her ex-husband, Mike, asks her to find him someone new. In addition to a heartfelt story, this book is so funny at times - Celine's crazy father chasing young women, and her sister making a fool of herself over a man at work.
I felt that Celine was unsure of the direction of her love life, unsure of whether the divorce was the right wait to go and unsure of revisiting the relationship with her first love. I do warn you though, reading this will take everything to hold yourself together and not fall apart in a complete mess.
