Even though Lars von Trier loves to polarize, rather seems to make enemies than friends, often gives the impression to be an oddball, and many movie fans and critics are unable to get into many of his movies, he is still a unique director who makes movies that others would not even think about or dare to make.On a snowy evening, middle-aged bachelor Seligman finds self-diagnosed nymphomaniac Joe beaten up and lying in the alleyway behind his apartment. However, it takes a person struggling with manic depression and OCD to understand and create a trilogy of films about the subject. From 25 December 2013, and approximately four months ahead, the four-hour long NYMPHOMANIAC Volume I and II is released worldwide. When the complete Director's Cut had its general release world premiere in Copenhagen on 10 September 2014, major Danish critics gave it high ratings.

Director Lars Von Trier, as the passionate, creative film-maker that he is, once again overflows his self righteous, controversial views into his work, not worrying about how outrageous these may be. Few directors are as stubborn as Lucas, but many share his desire to refine their films decades after release (Ridley Scott delivered his “final cut” of Blade Runner in 2007, a quarter-century after its 1982 debut). This was an additional decision to the choice to split the movie up into Nymph()maniac I and Nymph()maniac II which were released successively. When the two conceive a baby together, Marcel, Jerôme struggles to keep up with her sexual needs and allows her to see other men. What didn’t make the cut, though, was Skarsgard’s great comment about how the flavor combination of “chocolate and sperm” must have contributed to Young Joe’s euphoria. As controversial as it is creative, Nymphomaniac’s all-star cast includesCharlotte Gainsbourg, Stacy Martin, Stellan Skarsgård, Shia LaBeouf, Christian Slater, Jamie Bell, Willem Dafoe, Connie Nielsen, Sophie Kennedy Clark, Mia Goth and Uma Thurman.Along with the appetizers and the character posters, five theatrical posters (three for the complete feature and one for each volume) and an international trailer featuring some of the explicit sexual scenes, were released. Joe is a firsthand witness as her father deteriorates from an unnamed illness, into fits of violent spasms, paranoid delusions and screams for his wife. However, this being Von Trier - and with 'no happy endings', because there are no happy endings with mental illness, only coping mechanisms - Seligman and Joe play a game.

But they couldn’t possibly have cut a half-hour consisting solely of flaccid penises and O-faces and Shia LaBeouf ravenously performing cunnilingus — could they? Stratton's co-host Margaret Pomeranz meanwhile, while also praising the boldness of the performances, felt the film's unsimulated depictions of sex didn't add to the narrative and as such had, "such an undercurrent of sadism that I was, not repelled, but distanced". Long before the movie was released it was already creating quite a few controversies, especially since Lars von Trier announced that he would create real sex scenes and even thought about releasing a Hardcore and a Softcore Version of the movie ( News). Seligman protests and attempts to justify his behaviour, but Joe shoots him, grabs her things, and flees the apartment. The narrative chronicles Joe's promiscuous life from adolescence to adulthood and is split into eight chapters told across two volumes. Realising she has no place in "normal" society, Joe turns to organised crime and becomes a debt collector, utilising her extensive knowledge of men, sex, and sadomasochism. Nymphomaniac initially received an NC-17 from the Motion Picture Association of America in early 2014.
