Warhammer Community: The End and the Death Volume III – The Final Cover Reveal (posted 9/8/2023) (last accessed 9/8/2023) The storyline is of Vedic priests brewing and drinking Soma in an attempt to experience divinity. It describes the whole population getting drunk on Soma. It compares this to some Christians' use of "music, incense, vigils drear, and trance, to bring the skies more near, or lift men up to heaven!" But all in vain - it is mere intoxication.

They are rare creatures, these firstborn of the Emperor's gene-craft. Such was their psycho-physical design, and the intricacy and sophistication of the gene-craft involved, that the modifications which went into their creation required such strict biological and psychological criteria that only a mere one in many thousands of potential candidates might prove suitable for the simplest of the steps involved in the Legio Custodes creation process. The Emperor is forced to sit on the Golden Throne to avoid the rift from consuming Terra. Later on the Sisters of Silence plug a thousand psykers into it and it allows the Emperor to leave the throne temporarily. For millennia, the Adeptus Custodes have formed the unyielding core of the Emperor's multi-layered defences. Those Custodian Guard charged with the physical protection of the Master of Mankind spend every waking second devoted to their task, refining their warrior skills and constantly testing and updating their own strategies to ensure the sanctity of the Emperor's throne. They are His last line of defence against a hostile galaxy hell-bent on Humanity's destruction. If they fail in their task, the Imperium of Man will collapse from the inside out. Their duty is so sacred, their reputation so profound, that even Space Marines and Inquisitors kneel before them. After the breaking of the Orks upon Ullanor, the Emperor returned to Terra, taking His Custodian Guard with him. The seeds of doubt He left behind among the Space Marine Legions soon became the roots of treachery, for there is darkness in every soul, and the Ruinous Powers have always known how to exploit it. Before a single generation had passed, the insidious taint of Chaos had infected a full half of the Emperor's primarchs, Horus foremost amongst them. These Arch-traitors spread the moral decay to the Legiones Astartes they led, and the galaxy was lit with the fires of strife and civil war. The Adeptus Custodes, known as the Legio Custodes during the era of the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy, is the Imperial adepta responsible for protecting the Imperial Palace and the physical body of the Emperor of Mankind, as well as serving as His most important emissaries, His companions, and the keepers of His many secrets. The Custodes is an elite cadre of genetically-engineered transhuman warriors who are even more potent in combat than the Adeptus Astartes. They are to the Space Marines as the Emperor is to His primarchs, and it is rumoured that each was created by the Master of Mankind personally. His might permeates them, burns in their eyes and flows through their veins as surely as their blood. As such, the Adeptus Custodes are widely regarded as the deadliest warriors in the galaxy, Human or otherwise. The hotter the forge, the finer the blade, or so they say. The forge of war in which we now find ourselves blazes hotter than anything the Imperium has seen in ten millennia. We of the Adeptus Custodes were built to endure these fires. They will not be our end. Instead, we will be honed to the finest cutting edge, that we may be the bane of even the foulest heretics." Aaron Dembski-Bowden is a titan of the Warhammer 40,000 setting, writing some of the most well received and loved books, enshrining himself safely alongside the likes of veterans Abnett, King, and McNeil. His two previous Heresy novels, The First Heretic and Betrayer, both took previously unlikable or one dimensional legions and transformed them into some of the most complex and multi-layered takes on the traitor Space Marines. Before Dembski-Bowden, Kharn was simply a blood mad lunatic who shouted kill, maim, burn! Now he's both tragic and still extremely tough and cool. Although there's no saving Erebus, the Word Bearers got a new lease on life with his take on Lorgar and his sons. When he appeared to Ezekiel Sedayne, prior to the Unification Wars, he appears as a man in rich clothes. His hair was brown, long, and clean. The Emperor's face was both youthful and old. His eyes were placid brown and deeper than time. When speaking to Ezekiel, Ezekiel states that he looks different than when he appeared to the people. The Emperor states that he does change his appearance sometimes, but claimed that his appearance to Ezekiel was "truthful". [24] The Emperor battles the Warmaster Horus aboard his flagship, while the Legio Custodes attempt to come to the aid of their liege.

Before that he puts Drach'yn into the body of the Custodes Tribune and tells him to run into the Webway as deep as he can go. The Custodes has so much willpower that he is able to resist being taken over by Drach'yn and in effect is a prison for the Daemon now wandering inside the Webway The strongest raged at the sin of His existence. With a gestalt bellow loud enough to shake the windless air of this alternate reality, they fought to reach their archenemy. The Legio Custodes, though it kept its numerical strength of ten times that number, was reforged as the "Adeptus Custodes" before the time of the Second Founding, becoming castellans of the Imperial Palace whose sole and solemn duty was to protect the Emperor from final death.

Much of the book is a description of the path from Terra down to the Webway Gate. The Emperor built it to be a really grand and massive thing, intended for all humans to travel the Galaxy from it. It was going to be an airport on steroids and the throneroom was more of a lounge area. Hundreds of wars have been fought by the Adeptus Custodes over the aeons -- some in Terra's defence, some in secret, and some further afield. Even when the din of war recedes, these warriors work to test and refine the protective aegis they hold before their master, sending agents into the Sol System to divine likely routes of infiltration and assassination so they can stay ahead of even the most inventive enemies. The Adeptus Custodes have long honed strategies and tactics in case they should be called upon to join the frontline fight for Humanity's survival. The day of that remit has finally arrived. The resurrected Primarch Guilliman, restored to his ancient role as the lord commander of the Imperium and Imperial Regent, has met alone with his father, the Master of Mankind, and emerged with a clear vision of Humanity united in battle. The histories of Old Night tell us to fear Men of Stone and Men of Iron. They should have warned us too, of the most terrible monsters of all: the Emperor's Men of Gold." The Adeptus Custodes are the Auric Mortalis ("The Golden Death"), the dread guardians and only living beings permitted to be in the presence of the Emperor unencumbered. Now ensconced deep within the Sanctum Imperialis of the Inner Palace on Terra, they continue their eternal watch over the recumbent form of the Emperor upon the Golden Throne. The American composer Charles Ives took stanzas 14 and 16 of The Brewing of Soma ("O Sabbath rest.../Drop Thy still dews...") and set them to music as the song "Serenity"; however, Ives quite likely extracted his two stanzas from the hymn rather than from the original poem. Published in his collection: "114 songs", in 1919, the first documented performance of the Ives version was by mezzo-soprano Mary Bell, accompanied by pianist Julius Hijman. [4] Uses [ edit ]

Even in the days before the Horus Heresy, it was a rare and blessed thing to see a member of the Legio Custodes, and due to the confinement of the Emperor to the Golden Throne, it has become an almost unthinkable event for a present-day citizen of the Imperium. Only this time the Custodian Guard would be accompanied by the new gene-crafted warriors meant to replace the Thunder Warriors; the first few thousand prototype Space Marines, most of whom would go on to form the nascent I st Legion, later known as the Dark Angels.

For the rest of the Heresy, the Emperor was forced to deal with the Golden Throne's malfunction, which created a Warp Breach in the depths of the Imperial Palace. As Daemons flooded through the breach, the Custodian Guard and Sisters of Silence held them at bay while the Emperor punishingly exerted himself on the Golden Throne to prevent all of Terra itself from being swallowed. With his attentions turned to this crisis, the Emperor left management of Horus' rebellion to Malcador and Rogal Dorn. During this sad state of affairs, the Emperor engaged in telepathic communications with the lowly Astropath Kai Zulane, who had been given a vision of the Heresy's conclusion. During their psychic communiques, the Emperor revealed he not only already knew his ultimate fate, but had accepted it. [13]
