Drool bibs. These tiny bibs are intended for small infants who drool all over everything. Or infants who spit-up frequently. Our opinion: they’re pretty useless—they’re too small to catch much drool or spit-up. Blanket Sleepers/wearable blankets. These are heavyweight, footed one-piece garments made of polyester. Used often in winter, blanket sleepers usually have a zipper down the front. In recent years, we’ve also seen quite a few fleece blanket sleepers, their key advantage being a softer fabric and a resistance to pilling. Another option is a wearable blanket or swaddling blanket. See the previous chapter for our top recommendations. You may want to put a t-shirt on baby and then wrap her up in a swaddling blanket or wearable blanket. Price. While most formula dispensers are priced around a similar point, a few like the Joovy were more pricey. As always, we look to see if there is some justification for a higher price point.

Some migration of formula. While it definitely wasn’t a lot of migration, there was some formula from other compartments that moved around. We don’t think it’s enough to be concerned, however. Good quality. We like the metal spring mattress platform—some low-end cribs come with flat wood boards as a mattress base, which we don’t recommend. Twist test. Does the lid twist easily to the next compared to competitors? You don’t want to develop carpal tunnel syndrome from your formula dispenser. Most have three compartments, but a couple had four or an additional dispenser for a one bottle serving. If you are out for a long day or have twins, four compartments are better than three.

Cute extras. In addition to a sturdy bassinet, this model features a cute mobile and light/vibration module.

Not much padding. We thought this car seat had adequate padding for most trips, but it isn’t as cushy as other seats. The travel vest comes in three sizes: small and large and extra large. Each has slightly different weight limits. Sometimes, the simpler the baby product, the better. Case in point: Fisher-Price’s Soothing Motions Bassinet. Basically, this is a simple bassinet with mesh sides, swing motion, vibration and lullabies. It came out tops in our testing for ease of use and overall quality. However, we do recommend you buy a few regular-style vinyl bibs for travel. You can wash them off much more easily than the standard terry-cloth bibs.

While we recommend the HALO Bassinest, we say pass on their “newborn insert,” an accessory designed to create a smaller space inside the bassinet for newborns. If you are under 5’5”, you may find reaching into a standard-size stationary crib challenging. Since most cribs sit a foot or two off the floor and drop-side cribs were phased out in 2011, shorter parents may find it difficult putting baby in a standard crib when the mattress is in its lowest position. At only 34” tall, the Hudson sits low to the ground making it much easier to put baby into and out of the crib. Gowns. These are one-piece gowns with elastic at the bottom. They are used as sleeping garments in most cases.
