About this deal

The EGR valve (Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve), sits in the engine bay and exhaust gasses flow through it before moving on through the DPF filter. Because diesel fuel is quite oily in it’s formulation, diesel cars often suffer from carbon build up in the engine. An EGR valve is a prime candidate for coking up with carbon and often results in reduced gas flow through the valve. Again, a common cause for EGR valve problems is frequent short journeys around town as opposed to motorway journeys. It’s mostly a cost saving exercise as filters easily become clogged up, especially with city driving where vehicles are driven at slow speeds in residential areas. He went on to say, “We’re asking the ASA to clamp down on those advertising these dubious practices … But we’re also calling on the Government to make it illegal to remove these pollution filters in the first place”. If you only ever use your car for short journeys around town and never drive on a motorway, it’s recommended to use a DPF cleaner in every second or third tank of fuel, doing so will signifanctly reduce soot built up in the DPF.

Update – October 2023– We have updated our product recommendations in line with some excellent new products that have been released in the UK market. The Used Car Guy holds no liability for your outcomes when trying the procedure listed above. This article is meant only to aid car owners that wish to avoid spending large amounts of money on their used car. Generally, DPF cleaners begin to work pretty much straight away after being application. Research has shown that vehicles can start to show improved performance as little after 10-15 minutes after the DPF cleaner has been applied. Once you’ve applied the cleaner, you should start to see a noticeable improvement from your car. How Often Should I Use DPF Cleaner? Have the Dpf removed and a remap but I believe that the penalty for so doing is the registered keeper being put in an iron coffin with spikes on the inside. So do additives and in particular DPF cleaning additives work? Yes absolutely, but they can’t perform miracles. If the soot load becomes too great, a vehicle fault may occur that will prevent regeneration whilst driving, which should be investigated and corrected. In these cases, the DPF must be manually cleaned by adding a cleaning treatment to loosen and dissolve the soot and allow it to pass through the filter.

SAVING ON AVERAGE" and "AVERAGE PRICE" are calculated as an overall average of prices and savings obtained on quotes on the same job type within the radius from which quotations are obtained. Since 2014, any diesel vehicle missing a diesel particulate filter will automatically fail its MOT. The Guardian newspaper revealed that thousands of drivers have been caught without a DPF fitted to their vehicles. Our advice would be to use a good quality DPF cleaner to keep the system clean and also to ensure your car is treated to a decent run out allowing the system to do what it needs to do. This is one of the reasons we have added to and enhanced our Best DPF Cleaner article as the needs has increased What is a DPF? DPF Filters have a life of about 100,000 km when they will become saturated with ash. At this point they will need manually cleaning or replacing. If, however, you can pinpoint the issue, a specialised engine cleaner will have insanely good results. Here are the common warning signs:After using your DPF treatment head to the motorway and drive your vehicle at extremely high revs for at least 30 minutes. Because DPF filters have limited size and capacity, they can only store a limited amount of exhaust soot. Once the system has reached it’s capacity threshold (usually around 80%), the vehicle will attempt to begin a process called “Regeneration” What Is A DPF Regeneration? It can be quite hard to diagnose where the deposits are building up in your engine, so for most applications, a generalised cleaner will probably be better. You can also use the DPF cleaner in conjuction with cheaper diesel as opposed to using more premium diesel fuels at each fill up. Should I Use A DPF cleaner If My Warning Light Is Not On? Trouble is as a tradesperson I need a largish van & really there is no choice, big petrol vans are very few & far between, so it’s diesel or nothing & if you do a big percentage of local work, with short trips & / or idling, a DPF equipped one is a rotten idea.
