About this deal

After the word has been spelled, the next person must say ‘Sparkle.’ This encourages active participation — if the student wasn’t paying attention and doesn’t say sparkle, they will have to sit down! Let’s face it, the English language is hard! Spelling can often be so difficult and confusing, so I wanted to share some ways to change it up a bit and make it more exciting! I collected a list of 100 fun spelling games and activities! Switch between group and independent work. After a fun group game, reinforce learning with an independent activity. This also allows children to work collaboratively with their peers and have some reflective concentration when alone. How many spelling words can your students include in a story? Write a short story that makes sense and illustrate it. 25. KEYBOARD WORDS

Get your pupils to create their own mini dictionaries. Whenever they look up a new word, they should write it down in their dictionary. They could also write down words they regularly misspell to help remember them in the future. You can let your child play teacher, giving them the opportunity to take control and reverse the roles. There are plenty of phonics schemes out there designed to help children with reading and spelling. Phonics are great for helping children to read, and they’re also great for building children’s confidence with their writing. When I first started teaching children were encouraged to ask for every spelling they didn’t know. You can imagine how slow their creative writing was! I had no idea whether a child who struggled with spellings had great vocabulary or a flare for story writing because they constantly had their hand in the air to ask for a spelling. With knowledge of phonics they can write with confidence, sounding out words that can be read even if they aren’t quite spelt correctly! For children who are really struggling with their spellings, modern technology can work wonders. Apps and games on the keyboard are fun and interactive, but keep in mind that a lot of keypads use capital letters, which won’t always help a child that can’t easily interchange the two. Muscle memory Treat Them As IndividualsSpelling Selection Activities - Keeping up regular spelling practice is essential, and this resource can help your class do just that. With activity suggestions for Monday through to Friday, there's lots to choose from to help your pupils stay on top of their spellings. They will help kids to spell words correctly and have fun in the process! I hope you will find something that will work for you today! These spelling games for kids are all perfect for kids in elementary school. Encourage students to learn more about their spelling words with the help of their classmates and a game of Celebrity Heads With Words.

A common misconception amongst parents is that once a child has managed to spell a word correctly once or twice, that’s it, they know it for life. I have seen some very frustrated and anxious homeschooling parents –‘I taught my child that spelling a few weeks ago and they keep getting it wrong’. Parents who helped their children learn their weekly spellings for a test would be amazed when, a week later, a perfect score was not attained. There has been numerous studies into whether joined handwriting helps children with their spellings and you can argue either way. After A LOT of research I think I fell on the side that claims joining handwriting helps spelling, for numerous reasons that I won’t delve into. I expect it is more of a case of it suits some children better and not others, as is so often true. It is worth considering if your child is really struggling. Capital Letters Are Different! Put movement into learning words. Have your child clap for each letter or take a step for each letter as they spell the word out loud. This will help to reinforce the correct sequence of letters, as well as develop full recall for the word. This one is more about just using the word in a sentence…students need to use the word in an ASKING sentence.Play games. Learning to spell can feel quite boring if your students just practice through the same methods. Adding a game or two into your lessons can help engage your class and create some friendly competition. Looking to enhance students’ understanding of the meaning of their spelling words? You could also challenge students to share the definition of the word to earn a point for their team or read out the definition and challenge students to guess the word before spelling it. Write Rainbow Words Can your students think of a word that rhymes with each of their spelling words? 21. SPELLING COLORS English spelling has more exceptions than rules. It is actually quite unfair that your child has to grow up learning English, as in other languages you are able to read and spell as soon as you learn the phonetic alphabet. In English, the phonetic alphabet will let your read less than a half of all words. On the flip side, learning phonics will help your child to read half of all words. But still, you get the point, it ain’t easy. Take the sound ‘ough’ for example. It can be pronounced in ten different ways. We recommend that you try out a range of spelling activities in your classroom. Not only does this keep your spelling lessons fun and varied, but it also allows you to experiment and find activities that work best for your pupils. Everyone learns differently, so this is a great opportunity to find out what's most effective for your class and individual pupils.

Year 2 Adding -ed and -ing to Verbs with a Long Vowel Worksheets:For Year 2 pupils, this worksheet covers a key topic - adding -ed and -ing to verbs. SPELLING WORD SYLLABLES These beginning sound codes have been such a hit in the seasonal spelling activities that I knew I had to include them in this set, too.

Make a list of your class' commonly misspelt words. Go over these misspellings with them, busting any spelling myths and showing the correct spellings. Wow! What an exhaustive list! With all of these awesome spelling games and activities, there will never be a dull spelling moment again, right?! 😉 Some children can cope with more, and some children will need less, but use five to start with and see how it goes. Don’t Correct Every Spelling Adding 'er' or 'est' Worksheet:Teach children how to add 'er' or 'est to a root word with this fun and printable spelling worksheet. It also challenges them to choose 3 of the words from the worksheet and use them in sentences. This is a great resource for learning key spelling rules. When they have correctly guessed, they will then attempt to spell the word. If they are correct, they earn a point. Play then moves to the next player in the group who will have to guess the word on their own hat. The goal of the game is to have the most points in the group.

Commonly Misspelt Words Interactive Word Search - Give your students an edge by practising commonly misspelt words with them. This is another interactive game that will surely attract and hold their attention. The types of spelling that children are expected to learn increase in year 2, like common exception words (words that don't follow the usual rules but are used regularly) as well as many new spelling patterns. You can support your child or your class in learning these spellings by using these helpful strategies. With these new ways to practise spellings, you can make spelling practice engaging and impactful. I’m curious…. in your already crowded instruction schedule, does word study have a place? Have you found a way to make spelling instructiion more than just giving a list of words on Monday and assessing on Friday? Resources for teaching spelling can be hard to come by. Sometimes it feels like with the intense focus on more critical thinking skills in literacy, explicit spelling instruction (or word study) has become an outdated practice.
