About this deal

So join me on a caffeinated adventure through Rome’s rich coffee culture, as we explore the settings, aromas, and flavors that make each of these cafés a cherished part of the dynamic but steadfast tapestry that is Rome. The weather was warm so I grabbed an espresso, made with a delicious smoked and nutty blend, and set myself up in Roscioli’s comfortable outdoor seating area before splurging on my treats. This one is different from most of our above recommendations which focus more on historical coffeehouses with traditional style Italian coffee and brewing methods. However, Pergamino is a Third Wave coffeehouse focused on more contemporary and innovative ways of making coffee. They source their fair-trade beans from small Italian roasters. When it comes to the best Roman cafe, we can’t skip Faro – Luminaries of Coffee which opened in 2016. At Faro, they specialize in coffee and they’ve got an impressive coffee menu as well. It’s a more modern, less traditional Italian-style place, comfy, simple, and perfect. Faro is a coffee shop chain actually and you could find them in different parts of the world. Nearby Attraction: Piazza del Popolo (located in the piazza!), Spanish Steps (9 minute walk), Trevi Fountain (16 minute walk), Borghese Gallery (24 minute walk)

The main reason to come here is for the view, but if you are not willing to pay for the view, I’d go elsewhere. There are lots of other great places to get coffee in this area. La Casa del Caffè Tazza d’Oro is a beloved Rome café on the corner of Piazza della Rotonda, a square where tourists wait in line for their turn to enter the free-to-visit Pantheon. Indeed a drink here is not cheap, no surprise given Antico’s location and popularity, and I wince every time I hand over €7 for a single espresso. But it was a great coffee, to be expected from the imported Ethiopian arabica blend I chose. I was met with the sweet and bitter aroma of caramelised pecans and was left with a surprisingly silky cocoa finish on my tongue. This was the first cafè of its kind in Rome. The Anticafé is more of a coworking space with the look of a cozy coffee shop.Giolitti is a seriously popular coffee stop that always seems to have a crowd of visitors and locals, and is well-known for offering quality ice cream and gelato as well as coffee. It has also attracted a number of politicians and celebrities including John Travolta, Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, and the Obama daughters Sasha and Malia.

Note that there is also a second location of Giolitti in Rome located next to Lake EUR (a large artificial lake), which opened in 1960. It is called Giolitti Eur and in addition to selling gelato and pastries, it is also a full-service restaurant. The sweet fruitiness of the grappa paired perfectly with the cherry notes of the house blend recommended to me by my barista. If you’re looking for an unusual and non-alcoholic drink, try a taste of Barnum’s cold brew or Aeropress coffees. Most of the coffee places in Rome, kind of expect you to follow the mainstream. They are not so used to seeing customers dropping by with their laptops, sitting on their own with coffee. In some shops, especially if it’s not clear immediately that you are a “tourist”, they might think that something’s wrong with you. But Barnum is not just a place for good coffee. The café’s open and friendly baristas are always up for lively conversation, whether you’re discussing their special coffee beans or chatting about the history of the neighborhood.

Service can feel slow and a bit unfriendly in Rome, especially if you are from a country with a strong emphasis on customer service (e.g., United States). Rome, and other major tourist cities in Italy like Venice, don’t have the best reputation for customer focused service. Wishing you a wonderful trip to Rome, and just let us know if you have any questions as you plan your trip!

Note that some waiters in Rome have been known to directly ask tourists for tips, particularly Americans. Many out of discomfort of not knowing what is customary leave tips. But just know that tipping, especially beyond a service charge, is not expected and you are only being asked because you are not Italian. If this happens and you do not want to leave a tip, just politely refuse. Are there any Coffee Tours in Rome? caffè latte: espresso shot with a large amount of steamed milk, served in a glass or large cup, similar to an Americanlatte This coffeeshop is a bit further out than many of our recommendations and is not next to any huge tourist attractions. But it is not that you have to go too far out of your way to find it either. The location is near the Roman Jewish Ghetto, Ponte Sisto, and just across the river from the Trastevere neighborhood.
