E10 fuel is fine to use, but super unleaded with an ethanol content of 5 % is better and what we would recommend. The DUR1818 is heavier than some trimmers, and has a more modest 26cm cutting width than the Worx WG184E or the Bosch AdvancedGrassCut 36. Yet the design does a good job of reducing the workload on your shoulders, and Makita includes a strap for additional support. The shaft adjusts to give you a range of cutting heights and angles, and the only minor niggle is that the bump to activate the line feed doesn’t work the first time, every time. Still, if you’ve got a lot of grass to keep tidy, this versatile trimmer will comfortably do the job.

Our testers rate each trimmer for how it trims their facial hair, how smooth and easy to manoeuvre each trimmer is on the moustache, side of their face and on the chin, and if they irritate the skin. It's good practice to empty the fuel tank as much as possible – and completely if not in use over winter. Petrol is better stored in a bespoke container rather than in the machine. Believe it or not, relying on your trusty beard trimmer to handle all your grooming needs without any additional investment may not be the wisest decision. Let's face it, using the same device to trim both your facial hair and your intimate regions is, well, a questionable choice, my friend. Ergonomics play a vital role in all types of razors. You need a trimmer that can navigate the tightest corners with ease. If you have smaller hands, it's advisable to find one that fits comfortably in your grip. For gentlemen with larger hands, opting for a bigger razor will stop you feeling like you’re wielding a surgical scalpel.

Need to trim and shape your lawn or deal with areas your mower can’t reach? The best cordless grass trimmers make it easy

Cordless hedge trimmers give you the freedom to cut hedges further away from the house, and there is no cable to accidentally cut through. Flymo Contour XT: Best budget trimmer for small gardens It can be worth having both in your kit, but ultimately, it's down to personal preference. How do I choose a trimmer or hair clipper? Our testers rate every trimmer for how comfortable it is to hold, how easy it is to adjust and read the cutting length, and how easy it is to change the trimmer's combs and heads. According to Craig Meggs, barber at Ruffians, the most important things to look for in a new trimmer are manoeuvrability, adjustability and, of course, price. ‘Beard trimmers vary in size and durability,’ he explains. ‘It’s best to go for smaller, lighter- weight beard trimmers that come with a cordless rechargeable option, which will help both speed and accuracy.’ Adjustable Length Settings

They're best suited to gardeners working away from the house for longer periods of time, for example in a meadow or on an allotment – all you need is a can of petrol and you can trim for hours. A few drops of beard oil massaged into your beard and the underlying skin will keep it hydrated, nourished, and pleasantly scented.

The best beard trimmers you can buy in 2023

Unlike electric hedge trimmers, you don't have to worry about the extension cord reaching or the battery running down. Instead, you just need a can of petrol, with the two-stroke oil mixed in, sitting ready to refuel and carry on.

What makes this trimmer stand out for us, though, is the floating, flexible head, which allows the trimmer to follow the contours of your face, a bit like how electric shaver heads generally do. This didn’t necessarily speed up the trim by much, but it did make it feel a little more comfortable. And you can call us shallow if you want, but the rose gold detailing really looks the biz too. If you like your gadgets hi-tech and flashy, this digital beard trimmer is the one. It offers a great range of lengths – from 0.4mm to 5mm – which can be adjusted in 0.2mm increments, making it a great trimmer if you place a premium on precision. The digital display shows exactly what length you’re using, which is handy for preventing cutting mishaps (anyone who’s used a beard trimmer will be familiar with those). As a bonus, it can even remember what cutting length you last used. In truth, that’s more of a fun feature than an essential one, but the battery life display is genuinely useful, showing you how many minutes of cutting time you have left. The shaft length is 110cm, but you can adjust it by 17cm to suit jobs. The head of the trimmer is also adjustable which means people of all heights should be able to use it easily and you can rotate it 90 degrees to turn it from a strimmer into a specialised edge tool. We also test the strength and cutting capabilities of each trimmer by cutting dense brush bristles (both soft and tough ones).Regular trimming and shaping are necessary to maintain the desired shape of your long beard and prevent split ends. Using sharp beard scissors or a reliable beard trimmer, carefully trim any stray or damaged hairs. Daily application of beard oil is highly recommended. James Broadhouse is a big fan of Mountfield’s cordless Freedom 500 range, as the same battery can be used in each of the gardening tools. The MTR50LI Cordless Grass Trimmer, which is part of the range, is “lightweight, easy to manoeuvre and clean and offers great value for money,” he says. Mountfield is a heritage brand with decades of experience in gardening machinery, and Broadhouse says the quality of their tools is evident. This strimmer has an ergonomic design with a telescopic shaft (and eight adjustable positions), soft-grip front handle and simple electronic control panel that make it easy to adjust and comfortable to use. It’s completely cordless, so there are no leads to get in the way.
