Discrete gammar lessons are also taught to ensure specific grammar knowledge is taught and revisited. Editing flaps are extra pieces of paper that stick onto their writing and show the additional sentences added into their work. As part of the teaching sequence, teachers plan experience days; sentence stacking lessons and independent writing sequences.

The 9 GRAMMARISTICs cover national curriculum requirements, capturing the broad spectrum of key grammar knowledge. Once the children can segment sounds, they begin to label the pictures they see with words and soon they use these words to formsentences. Children are immersed in a key text, revealing plot points one at a time through the 'slow reveal'to maintain the excitement of revealing the story.Jane Considine will be coming to Northamptonshire on the 12th December 2023 to deliver Hooked on Books, in person. Now in her 25th year in the primary education profession, Jane’s incredible knowledge and expertise provides a solid framework for teachers, enabling her to support, enrich and sharpen the teaching of reading, writing and spelling. Model section – the teacher close models a sentence that outlines clear writing features and techniques. Experience days immerse children in experiences linked to their writing and drench them in vocabulary linked to the lenses in ‘The Writing Rainbow’. The FANTASTICS are used to focus the children's ideas about what can be seen, igniting their senses and broadening their vocabulary.

About - The Training Space

understand a range of punctuation and the effect it can have on the reader in both writing and reading. The Writing Rainbow is the essential teaching and learning resource for all schools that teach writing using Jane Considine’s systems. In each year group, children will be taught specific spelling rules which they will build on and use throughout the scheme.

The Training Space

It is expected that by the end of Key Stage 1 children know the example words for year 1 and 2, as well as including almost all exception words which are used frequently in pupils’ writing. The Large Writing Rainbow Symbols are a set of brightly coloured, hard wearing resources for use in all aspects of the teaching and learning process. The Three Zones of Writing: The FANTASTICs (Ideas), The GRAMMARISTICs (Tools), and The BOOMTASTICs (Techniques) support their learning, precision and writing. The 2014 National Curriculum identifies spelling lists that every child in each Key Stage of primary school needs to know by the end of that Key Stage. During the initiate section children ‘chot’ (chat and jot) down their ideas from stimulating resources, such as pictures, music and drama.

Writing Resources - The Training Space

The FANTASTICs system, which is also used in the teaching of reading, allows children to identify the nine elements that all text types are comprised of.

At Whitehouse Primary School we are very proud of our pupil’s handwriting and take particular care in our cursive/joined-up handwriting style. When pupils are familiar with these nine elements, they are able to ensure that they are incorporated into their writing. Children learn to sentence stack, focusing on the style of the author and impact of words and sentences. This allows them to become more confident on the range and repertoire of aspects to showcase in their independent writing. Children are challenged to ‘Deepen the Moment’ which requires them to independently draw upon previously learnt skills and apply them to their writing during that chunk.
