Coloursoft:Both are soft and smooth however Coloursoft have a softer texture and lay down is different. Chromaflow pencils offer a good quality of creative experience without breaking the bank, and are a great option for beginners to experiment with and build on their skills.

The Chromaflow are definitely thinner and lighter due to the size of the barrel and the type of wood used in manufacturing but this does not affect the quality of the cores. This was done on cold pressed watercolour paper and the result was acceptable bearing in mind the surface. An Artists Grade Colored Pencil is one that falls under high levels of Blue Wool or ASTM lightfast ratings, a pencil that can be used by a colored pencil artist to sell their original work. Just wanted to let you know that I’ve heard back from Derwent about the paper they used for the tests in their Product Matrix. The only differences between the cores of these Derwent pencils and the Artists range, is that they are thinner in the Studios. I think it fair to say that these fit into a logical slot as a softer version of the Artists/Studio pencil.

The Drawing and Lightfast ranges are 100% lightfast and therefore perfect if you are selling your original works. Derwent never let us down when it comes to botanical palettes, which I am sure is connected to the fact that the home of the company is Keswick, arguably the most beautiful, idyllic landscape in the UK, The Lake District. I have to say, of all the pencils that I have reviewed, the Derwent Chromaflow are perhaps the most complicated pencil or review to get right and accurate. Derwent pencils are marketed by an English company based in Keswick in the Lake District (The Cumberland Pencil Company) with a great reputation as being the most active in producing new quality art materials. My final test is to show the pencil on black paper, ordinarily when I am reviewing a product I make that review completely about said product, I do comparisons on separate reviews, however on this occasion I have added Prismacolor samples. There is quite a major step up in colour strength when wet, and you need to know what the effect of water is going to be before you set out on a picture.

So cards on the table, completely honest and open with you and my concerns when the Derwent Chromaflow first hit the shelves, both in the US and around the globe, so now onto my actual review of the pencil as I never issued a review when they were first released and my impression of the palette expansion as well as the palette choice. One of the things I think Derwent excel at is providing pencils for certain groups, every group from young artists, crafters, adult colouring book artists, Professional Colored Pencils artists and many more are all catered for under the one banner. Although Derwent have made it clear that the Chromaflow are not a profession grade pencil, whilst I agree with them, I would suggest the Chromaflow is a Professional Artist quality pencil. I used it in some areas as a burnish blender or to lighten up some of the areas and I didn’t feel like it really added any additional value. The market that Derwent are creating the Chromaflow pencil for I feel will really become attached to this pencil and I feel Derwent are placing the pencil in the right hands.
