As the name suggests, closed terrariums are entirely enclosed glass containers whereas open terrariums are mostly enclosed with an open top or side wall. In a closed terrarium without airflow, the air is recycled and the forced humid environment acts as a mini ecosystem that does not require additional water once it's established. The most important thing to remember when planning your terrarium is to ensure you choose plants that have the same growing requirements as one another including humidity, watering, soil, and light. Mini Russells’ Miniature Boston Fern – A significantly smaller version of the classic Boston Fern that grows just 2” tall and 3” wide. It’s adorable! You only need a small amount of substrate, so it’s easy to explore shallow containers (or you can make use of panels to create a moss wall!).

These are just a couple favorites: There are a few very similar mosses in the Thuidiumclassification, and they’re easily mistaken for one another. Meanwhile, sheet mosses can be torn up and placed evenly around a terrarium (they’ll grow out in every direction and eventually join up!). Clumpy mosses also hold together well – and tend to remain quite compact – so you can quite literally sculpt a landscape by tearing off appropriately sized chunks and putting them together like a jigsaw. You can simply add moss to a terrarium by the clump like this. Hypnum Mossis incredibly common, though that doesn’t mean it’s not a valuable member of the moss community.
