With a Digitone (or A4), I can happily sit with it solo and create things I really like, or I can sit with it plugged into my Force/MPC and grab multiple clips/parts that I really like, or have it in the DAW, and, yes, really like what comes out. Overall this device is criminally underrated, it can replace a bunch of volcas and an external sequencer (maybe not in terms of sound but in terms of music making) and it's very competitive with Syntakt that costs almost double than that and its much less portable. Syntakt might have an edge on some sounds (synths definitely not drum ones) but for a prototyping and fun to use device does this mattter? Record quantising is available, or you can add quantisation by degrees to clips after the fact — nice! Things are simpler at the rear of the MC‑101, with just a USB port, SD card slot, MIDI I/O ports and stereo audio outs. Roland MC-101: Editing Drums This may be a slightly ridiculous comparison and choice, but I currently own both the Syntakt and the MC-101 and I’ve decided I need to downsize my hardware setup and focus more on music making again by leveraging the DAW as the main production center instead of my MPC. I had a really good run with the MPC but I feel done with that now. I also have a couple of other hardware synths that are just collecting dust and probably need to go as well.

Whichever way you choose to record, you can either work quantised to a grid, completely unquantized to capture the true human performance, or somewhere in between for a little natural shuffle. Computerless Setup New Projects start with a pre-populated set of Scatters, but you can make your own. The presets demonstrate the more outlandish possibilities but I was keen to make some simpler effects for adding fills, and also to see if you could make sonic changes without the rhythmic side, somewhat like parameter scenes on an Elektron box. I managed to make some simple beat repeats with different speeds and durations, and a high-pass filter that can be held indefinitely. Again, just scratching the surface! One more thing... Like the Aira MX‑1 performance mixer, the new MCs can tie particular Scatter effects to individual steps within a measure. These are triggered simply by holding the main Scatter mode button. This can be used to create a bonkers effect sequence or buildup. I used it to tie a simple repeater to the last four steps, so I could drop in a fill without switching to Scatter mode. Roland MC-101: Sequencing Drums Scatter appears in various forms on the Aira products. It's primarily designed to add beat-repeat–type effects, fills and glitches to your master bus, although this really only scratches the surface. On the 101/707, Scatter can combine step-looping, pitch-shifting, reversing and any of the huge suite of insert effects provided on the unit. In Scatter mode, the pads store 16 different effect combinations which you can trigger momentarily.
